Question for Jeremy or anybody that actually knows something about cameras

I'm going to buy my wife a camera for christmas.  I know absolutely nothing about cameras.  My wife would be using it for taking pictures of soccer games and probably taking pictures of birds and other wildlife.  So with that said...would this camera be a good choice for the money?  Is there something else that would be a better value?

Maybe. The specs look ok,  but with sport and wildlife you need a good reaction time from the camera. Many non-dslr have a slight hesitation between pushing button taking picture. In sports that is a deal breaker.

But it may work for her if she jusy wants a few shots of kids playing sports. As long as she isn't wanting to really get into photography which would require the ability to change lenses.

Yeah she's not trying to be a professional photographer or anything.  She's been wanting a new camera for a while though so I thought I might try and surprise her but I wanted to make sure something like this would be good enough for the things I was talking about her doing.

Yeah, probably would do the trick then.

I actually have this camera....

Like it a lot. Has huge zoom and does great HD video too. Would fit easier in her purse.

i swear by the sony NEX series. small, compact DSLR, easy to take to games without lugging around a case for it. wouldn't work if you were photographing pro football games for a job like jeremy, but it might do nicely for you.

here is some stuff i've shot with the sony nex-5

the nex-6 and 7 have been out for a while, but you're getting out of your apparent price range without much return on the value for what you're doing. i have a wide angle lens in addition to the 18-55mm standard. really useful if you do any kind of architectural or landscape photgraphy

You've got some really nice shots there.  That's a little out of my price range right now though.
