The ramifications of Luke's injury are enormous.

Not so sure this is the case.

Wouldn't surprise me to see CJ and/or Tolbert call it quits, and Kalil probably isn't but a season or two away as well.

CJ is not going to retire any time soon. Tolbert will probably go unsigned for a while during the season and will eventually retire when nobody wants him, but only for that reason. Kalil will certainly play two more after this year, maybe more.

I wish Luke nothing but the best of health, especially if that was the last game he played. Health is the most important thing.

The shockwaves this will send through not only the Panthers but the NFL is enormous. Kuechly is a top 5 player in the league. To see what happened last night was heartbreaking for fans. I can only imagine how fellow players felt. That could have been any player.

We will likely see a wave of retirements on the Panthers this offseason. It has been an emotionally draining season. Some that might be expected, and some maybe not as much. League wide, players are considering retirement younger and younger as the long term side effects of a career in the NFL become more widely known.

You can take it to the bank, the NFL is officially on the decline. Watching a marquee player possibly end his career on a Thursday night game, forcing the team to play on a short week that highlights the greed of the NFL, marks a new era of football. One where players will think twice before taking that cortisone shot and coming back into the game. One where a concussion can end a career. One where mothers won't let their kids play football.

Pick an MLS team now and look cool.

If you're an investor or a person with money, it might be smart to get involved in Soccer right now because it will probably be the newest major sport in the US soon.  If I had the money, I would probably see if I can buy a team.

Thursday night games simply shouldn't exist.

If you want them, they should only exist with teams getting an additional bye week in the season and then you give them a bye leading up to the Thursday night game.

I'd have to double check, but despite soccer appearing to be safer they have a pretty high rate of concussions as well.   Those guys smash their heads into the ground all the time when there legs get taken out.

Interesting.  I imagine MLS owners would discuss taking out tackling in their sport if they thought they could increase interest.

Headers have been banned in a lot of youth leagues because of concussions.

There needs to be a study done to show the amount of injuries sustained to teams playing Thursday games on short weeks vs regular weeks.

I agree that there will be some ramifications... for instance, it becomes a little more important to have a competent backup MLB, like we do now.  Do we resign Klein (if he will even stay)? can Mayo do it? Do we draft another LB and risk a Huddle implosion?

My guess is that Klein leaves no matter what we offer, we sign an aging leader-type vet that can backup multiple LB positions, we hope that aging vet and Mayo can fill in if needed.

edit: fug soccer.

I'm not a big fan of studies when it comes to obvious things.  3 days rest is 3 days rest.   Not only health but quality of the game.  Thursday football is pure something occurring for money at the cost of player health and quality of the game.

but yeah, owners will probably want a study because it simply puts the issue on hold hopefully to go away

I don't even know what NFLPA is for to be honest.  Ask yourself this....when is the last time the president of the NFLPA thought it was important for him to be a voice publically?  Can't even recall him getting out on a soapbox for anything in some time
