Is Shula to blame or the return of KB?

Carolina up 17-7 against the Broncos and lose 21-20.

Carolina up 10-2 on the Vikings and lose 22-10.

Carolina up 14-6 on Tampa Bay and lose 17-14

Carolina up on the Chiefs 17-3 and lose 20-17.

This isn't about just starting strong, it is about finishing strong.  The Broncos game should have been a wake up call for this in game one, yet eight games later, it is still happening.  Teams keep pounding on us even when they are down, but we are not punching back even when we are up. You are good enough to hold double digit leads heading into the fourth quarter against quality opponents, but yet are suddenly unable to hold on to the lead in a fifteen minute time period.

If the Panthers had just managed to hold on to 14 and 10 point leads against the Chiefs and the Broncos, respectively, which should be expected, they would be 5-4 now and 1/2 game behind the Falcons for the division lead.  Then the Saints game means something.  As it is now the Saints game will in all probability will mean nothing for the Panthers in a post season quest.

One thing that has really hurt this offense, and some may say it's a reach, is other players knowing they can tee off on Cam and the league isn't going to do poo about it.

Cam knows in the pocket they aren't going for a body hit, they're going for his head. IMO, this has him rattled whether we want to admit it or not. If you watch how players tackle other QBS vs Cam, there is a difference.

I seriously think this is getting to him. He's playing a game against a stacked deck in that aspect and there isn't a way for him to win.

I'm not saying this excuses every bad decision he's made, but I think it's making a difference in how he plays.

A team will have a few games in a season where they face a defense that can cause turnovers at the end of the game. The Panthers saw that against the Chiefs. The OL was dominated. The OL was directly responsible for Cam being rushed and unable to see the part of the field where the safety was located when the int occurs.

KB just ran into a fierce turnover producing secondary.

You want to know what is different? The Panthers once had a turnover producing secondary like the Chiefs showed up with on Sunday. That is the difference. You have to win the turnover battle in the 2nd half of games and you need more than just your LBs doing this.

The secondary has 0 FF compared to 7 in 2015.

The Panthers defense in 2nd half drives:

  • 2015: 57 drives; 16 scores and 11 turnovers through the first 9 games. 0 drives resulted in the defense allowing their opponent to take the lead.
  • 2016: 52 drives; 24 scores and 6 turnovers through the first 9 games. 5 drives resulted in the defense allowing their opponent to take the lead.

The secondary is the difference. The condition of the secondary is completely on Gettleman.

I think a lot hinges upon Cam, and yes its on him, don't be a homer. Glad to have him but these emotional roller coasters he rides determine the teams success, especially when he's the leader. The line is average i'll admit, but he's too good to be holding on to the ball as long as he does. He's the most unpredictable QB in the league other than Cutler. Look at Brady, Roethlisberger, Mariota, Russell, Carr, and Dak for instance, they all got positive and composed attitudes and you know what your going to get. Thats what you want in your franchise QB. I like Cam, I think he's got a good heart but he's wildly inconsistent and doesn't react well when things are going bad for the team. Hasn't had back to back winning seasons in his career. Also all those QBs above I named are mature guys, and Cam still struggles with that and he's almost 30. I hope he bounces back and gets better but theres a lot of things that scare me.

When our OL played adequately, and allowed our run game to open up last year, both Shula, and Cam looked damn good.

But the fact of the matter in relation to our current situation is, neither Shula, nor Cam decided to roll the dice with this OL in the offseason after witnessing our OL get thoroughly trounced in the Super Bowl. Then it just added insult to injury when the Broncos did it again in the opener, and from there it's just been a steep decline week to week.

All this hand wringing over one single bad play here or there is just f*cking stupid. The common factor in all of these instances always comes back to the OL.

Also, I cannot take someone seriously who still questions Cam Newton as a quarterback after watching the man win MVP with Ted Ginn Jr as his #1 WR last season. Have you been watching Ted Ginn play this year? Improve the OL, and establish the run game. This is not difficult.
