Who cares if it was Scarlett Johansson. This movie looks pretty good so far from the trailer. Things change in film a lot, I don't care for it for one. When they gave Samuel L. Jackson the role of Nick Fury, I didn't care. I know he's a great actor. There have been a lot of roles that have changed the race. People need to stop getting offended over the most minor things.

I think its easier to say that when you're white..but I get the frustration from an Asian persons POV.

Your whole culture/art aesthetic is cool enough to bank roll countless multi million dollar films, dragons, monsters and flying men are acceptable but you're telling me an Asian lead is too different to imagine for your industry?

Even though i'm not Asian or an actor I get how frustrating that can be.

Oh I get the frustration, I just think it's a little ridiculous. I'm brown and I think its perfectly fine with it.

And anyway....

Isn't one of the major themes in GitS about the notion of identity in general and sexual identity in particular in a post-human world?  The idea that when a human is "shelled", who the person in the cyborg is, is more important that the external appearance of the entity?

It would seem to me that the notion of a western actress cast as The Major would only reinforce one of the primary issues at the heart of the source material.
