How good have Gettleman's drafts been?

Pretty darn good.

2013:
Star - multi-season starter
Short - multi-season starter, 2nd team All pro
Kugbila - injuries, no games played, waived
Klein - high quality depth, has started several games, would probably start on most teams
Barner - very few snaps, traded after one year

2014:
Benjamin - multi-season starter
Ealy - starter
Turner - multi-season starter, pro bowl
Boston - starter
Benwikere - multi-season starter, cut
Gaffney - injured, waived

2015:
Thompson - starter
Funchess - starter
Williams - starter
Mayo - quality depth
CAP - quality depth

 

Too early to judge this year, but it looks like Bradberry will be a starter going forward, and Butler at least quality depth just because our interior D-line is so stacked.

Still, 12 out of 16 picks still on the roster.  And 10 out of 16 are/were starters, very very impressive indeed.  How does this compare to other supposedly great GMs, though?

 

In the same span, Belichick has made 26 draft picks.  With Collins being traded, only Three (3) of those 26 picks are currently starters on their roster!  In fact, only 10/26 are even currently on the roster.  Of the three starters: Brown, White, and Ryan, none have even made a pro-bowl.

What about Schneider of seahawk land?  He's made 28 picks in that span.  Only four (4) of those 28 are currently starting on their roster, and 9 are even on their roster at all.

 

There are GMs who have done a better job drafting than those two, like the Vikings GM, but I don't think any GM in the league has drafted as many starters and depth, at least as a percentage of their picks, as DG has hit on his first three drafts and counting.  And it's not like we're the browns where anyone with a pulse could even make our roster or starting lineup, either.

Really, if anything, I wish DG could get as many draft picks as those other GMs, as he's hitting on them like no one else.

DG has drafted well. What we have lacked this year is FA players. Hopfully he has learned from this and we will be more active next year.

I have it on good authority that he sucks at drafting and has pissed off every FA and their representatives to the point that nobody will ever sign with us.  He also has an ego and hates Cam.

he said he was going to build from the draft, and fill in gaps during FA. that's exactly what he is, and likely will keep, doing.

Your forgetting the coaches that developed the draft picks into quality NFL starters :)

The argument is based on the premise that because players are starters-ala Tre Boston-that they were somehow good picks and that the team benefits from having them, which is obviously quite an atrociously flawed premise.

 

The Panthers should strive to have as many drafted starters as team's like New England if that means the team has better players and can have consistent dominance.

 

Its also flawed in the sense that every team in the league believes they have "quality depth, is our GM the best executive in league history?" over players like David Mayo whose name you wouldn't know if he weren't here and whose presence could've been easily replaced with any street UFA/PFA.

But then what's it say about GMs who half the players they draft don't even make the roster?  That's much worse than what you perceive as a lesser quality starter or depth.
