There comes a point when there are not any good explanations why Cam doesn't get calls. There isn't a good reason why Cam always gets destroyed by media and fans that other QBs of a different color or attitude can get away with. After awhile I think that you need to accept the idea that racism exists in this world and that black people, latinos and women are treated differently. If you wish things like this don't exist or bury your head in the sand it doesn't mean that it is not happening.

Cam is getting treated differently. PERIOD. His attitude, size and race are all factors.

much like with racial bias in general, the different treatment of cam newton isn't easy to diagnose because you can't isolate variables (is it his race or his playing style? can you control for different refs?) but you can use qualitative evidence to build a case. you can look at historic treatment of cam and understand that race and perception are closely tied in our society. you can look at, say, tennessee mom who only found dancing outrageous when a bigass black man does it, or that guy who was tired of "that jungle football" (unless roethlesberger was doing it.) both those people would insist they aren't racist, but it's a proven fact that what we say and what we do are not the same thing. that's because bias is almost always unconscious and embodied in perceptions we don't realize we have.

refs don't dislike cam because he's black. they dislike him for his brash personality - a brash personality matched by countless white players who don't draw the same ire. thus their perception of brashness and inappropriate behavior is informed by their beliefs and actions on race and society. and that's something you can isolate.

it's high time to peg a ref in the nuts adam sandler style.

Yeah, how does a holding call trump a roughing the passer call? Ever tho they offset, it's like the roughing call never happened, and today was not the first time.

 

The only reason I can think is because the holding came first, but it's bullish!t.
