For me it was one of the worst in a while.

Did almost nothing to move the story and what little it did could have been done in a fraction of the time.

fug me the commercials were like watching the NFL

Its like they took the week off in expectation of doing a 90 minute episode next week.

Im pretty sure you will get this

I didn't know if it was just me...the episode just seemed like the writer's came up with the entire episode in 15 minutes, or like something a fan would write. Negan was just popping up around corners, there was no real look at where the Saviors lived. It's like it was all filmed in a small office building. Uninspired. Oh well, there's always next week.

this might not be super popular but here goes.

for me it goes back to an issue the show currently has...

they are in a milking period with the source material afraid of advancing the story too far.   Last season it was half a season...of the Negan intro buildup.  I mean they took an hour long episode to essentially explain Dwight....but most people already put all that about him together before the episode even aired.   I think the shows flaws show up more to the non-comic crowd.  I mean to the straight up TV nerd (and this is a TV show)....I think some would say they overdid and overplayed the Negan build up and then the whole "tune in next season" didn't help the character.

I mean, to me, as a pure TWD TV show viewer...Negan likely is overhyped.  TV/movies vs any form of print material never is on par with each other.  TV show needs to embrace their own way.  They often seem caught in a world where they can't figure it out.  I mean, they hit it with Daryl in terms of realizing they have to be their own animal.  But the storytelling struggles IMO.   Negan might be the greatest comic character but I seriously doubt he will be viewed as such in TV land.

to me, Negan is like the escapee said this past week to Dwight.  He is just a dude with a bat basically and for some reason everyone around him just seems to be going along with he wants. He is practically surrounded every moment by hundreds at this point that hate him.  But he has a bat? I know you can't insert rational thought into TV stories....but visually, Negan is a dude with a bat that doesn't even look that tough.  The visual is off.  Jeffery Dean Morgan can get jacked and all I see is chicken legs with a biker jacket.

now granted the character was just introduced.  So my tune could change. But I bet when he was first introduced in the comic...it was received much better.   I don't see them matching that comic feeling here.

Well said. I couldn't put my finger on it... it was just strange having so much buildup with Negan last season and in the premiere, to now having him just sort of walking about like a normal everyday character is sort of jarring to the TV audience. JDM is great with the dialogue and mannerisms, I do wish he was a little more intimidating though. It seems like we could be in for a good episode next week. I don't know, this past episode just didn't feel right to me. Several scenes, especially the Negan-Dwight-Daryl scene felt like I was watching actors acting, as opposed to being lost in the story telling.

Not gonna quote anybody to rain on parades, so.....

These episodes are important to introduce the new characters/scenarios. If you've not read the comic, Negan is important. But so are Dwight, his wife, (and several other folk), Ezekial, Shiva, the Saviors. There's a lot of back story to be revealed. Let it happen. We're into the "Rick isn't in charge anymore" part of the story. "How come they don't kick Negan's ass?" People have tried. People have failed.

Lemme put it another way. Whatever the best book you've ever read is, You've read it more than once.

PS Comic book Negan is not a big imposing figure. He's a fat bully. It's all about the manipulation and mannerisms.

Negan also has the Saviors living "high on the hog" taking food from other communities.

You really think Dwight and the rest want to give up their yummy sammiches?

Another key development a lot of people missed in this last episode centered on Dwight.  When Daryl first met Dwight, he asked him, "Have you ever killed anyone?"

Dwight said, "No, because once you do, there's no coming back."

And now here he is, shooting someone he has survived with for a long time in the back. A mercy killing I believe, but murder just the same.

Given Daryl is involved w/ Dwight even comic fans can't predict exactly how the TV show is forced to navigate without a by the book map....

but I would say it seems pretty obvious what road they are going down with Dwight/Daryl/Sherry.  Maybe not the exact path but I could guess three variations of the same road and nail it likely.  So yeah, I think Dwight would be willing to give up the yummy sandwiches and will.
