It was all speculation. A steelers coach tweeted that he might've had a hip injury. In fact, he's had hip related injuries during his tenure with the Eagles. However, nothing concrete ever showed up, so I understand your confusion. The only concrete injury status update was his injury in the Bears TC.

As far as how he signed with the Bears, it was expected he'd be depth, not starting. No one really has any idea how good/bad he really is anymore, as he has had the world against him. Honestly no one pretty much knows what is up with him.

I think teams hate to spread bad news. They don't want to be viewed as the team that leaks out news. So, they kinda beat around the bush as to why they let him go. They did not want to be the ones to stop him from getting work elsewhere.
