PFF with the right prediction; predicted our secondary to be last in the Preseason. We're dead last right now as well.

See, this is the crux of the problem around here. You load up your argument with an exaggeration, then blame Gman for not addressing said problem.

Just maybe, Gman and Ron, thought that they could count on Bene coming back stronger, and another year better? Why should they not? He has gotten better each year, why shouldn't we count on that trend continuing? Or that McClain could provide decent depth? He was serviceable/almost good last year. Unfortunately, he has been hurt.

If those two had stepped up as they were counted on. We could have eased the rooks in as opposed to throwing them to the wolves.

Same with the DE position. CJ, and Ealy played well down the stretch last year. Why shouldn't Gman, and Ron, feel good about getting them back? Or that Delaire could take that next step? He seemed to have the talent, he just couldn't translate that to the field.

Things looked better before the wheels fell off. Or it did if you weren't looking for things to complain about. We feel off as a team. But a few players, here and there, made that fall easier.

Bene needs a year to recover as most DBs who suffer severe leg injuries. Expecting him to play nickel for the length of the season was a tall enough task. Asking him to master communication and cover for struggling rookies while he must take care of himself is idiocy.

McClain is a serviceable journey man. If the rookies are not better than him from the start, then they are all immediate busts.

If a GM ever though an recovering nickel CB and a journeyman CB were the foundation of success in the secondary, then that GM should never work in the NFL again. What was the foundation of the secondary in the off season? Rookies and a shaky Boston at FS who can barely communicate in the secondary. Moving Coleman to the lone wolf position in the secondary as SS was obviously a bad decision from the start.

CJ and Ealy did not step up last season. That was Jared Allen. CJ was injured for a good portion of the season and struggled to compete on the injury after it healed some. Ealy was reduced in his role and had his snaps dramatically reduced as the season progressed due to all of his mistakes. Delaire spent most of his time on the ground and that continued into the off season and preseason. Jared Allen's awareness and experience were the difference in making QBs hesitate and pulling blockers off KK. If Star had a Jared Allen next to him, then his sack total would have gone up.

It was not hard to see the dynamic of last years defense.

Too many people HOPED it was Gettleman's picks that were stepping up when they were just inconsistently flashing their talent.

Anyone who thought Ealy and CJ could consistently get to the QB in less than 3 seconds to completely negate the secondary was fooling themselves. CJ has been struggling since the leg whip from 2013, and Ealy has struggled from day one with his discipline and awareness.

The wheels fell of in the off season and the draft. You could see it in training camp and the preseason if you did not dismiss their consistent struggles as typical while embracing their brief flashes of success as the emergence of their NFL dominance.

You spin things so out of shape, I bet you forgot what your original complaint was? Have at it. I would debate with you, but you just spin what I say to fit your skewed perspective.

I get it. You are smarter than the folks running the team, and most of us mere mortal on this here Huddle. Well Professor, have at it. I think I am going to drop this class, and find a Prof. that doesn't spin the facts to back his thesis.

Why do you even bother with him? He legitimately thinks he's smarter than everyone on the Panthers

You make a point, then he spins it to work for him. I thought I could dent his reserve. But he just keeps spinning the same things over, and over, and over again.

Oh well. I still love my Huddle.

What I don't understand is why Coleman has been so bad. It isn't just rookies screwing up out their. Kurt is the vet leader, highest paid guy back there and he looks like Haruki Nakamura half the time.

Others have mentioned not having Josh lock down a whole side of one field is hurting Coleman

How the hell Ron gets the blame somehow is whats more confusing......

The problem is posters keep making there own narrative on why moves made by DG are logical, when half of not majority aren't......like I said in 2014 this team has no direction or foreseeable plan

Kurt Coleman was never a franchise or foundation piece. He will never be that piece to a secondary. He is a very good complimentary player. A side kick.

A secondary does not rely on just one player to carry it.

A secondary relies on the CB to inform the FS on what he is going to do and the FS must respond accordingly in a split second. Communication is key. The good secondaries have CBs and a FS who can signal while in coverage with a move or a hand gesture to counter a route or a rotate in the secondary. If the CB does not communicate or hesitates, then the FS is hung out to dry and has to guess where he needs to be during a play.

Norman and Coleman clicked with Norman controling the secondary, and Coleman following his lead. Norman on his own with a rookie safety (unless he has a high football IQ) or Coleman on his own with rookie CBs will struggle. When a team finds a CB/FS combo they need to sign both for the same length contracts, or they need to let them go and try to find another pair that works. Giving Coleman a contract without Norman tied to him was a mistake.

The other problem is they moved Coleman to SS. Coleman is a FS who succeeds at playing deep centerfield. He is weak as a SS when it comes to tackling, getting off blocks, reading the play inside the box, and pursuit angles. This was apparent from his play last season when he was clost to the LoS.
