The chance that he holds out. He could have sat until week 12 how does Josh Norman on the couch help the team?

Except he wasnt going to hold out.  Even if he did, how would things be worse?  This secondary looks like the worst in nfl history

The funny thing is that people truly think hurney is better than gettleman cuz he made a few good first round draft picks

To be fair he made some amazing first round picks. He was money in the first round. He also found players like Josh Norman, Greg Hardy, and Gary Barnidge in the later rounds.

There was reports that he was. It would be worse because the team would have wasted cap space. Secondaries benefit from pass rush, the panthers are not getting to the QB what do you expect? Bress roasted the secondary last year when the team had a pass rush.

How quickly people change their minds. I agree he kind of took a lazy approach this past offseason and just assumed we would be just as good because all we were losing were some really old veterans and Josh. Also getting KB back had everyone comfortable and cocky. I was shocked that he wasn so comfortable with our DEs that he made no effort to improve there. I'm not mad about the rookie corners. I beleive they will be solid and have to play through this to get better. But you cannot have that young of a secondary and no pass rush at the same time. Aside from that he was honestly done a really great job for us. Just look at the bargain he was able to get Cam for

Wasted cap space for one season on the tag?  Right now gettleman is wiping his ass with the 20 mil cap space and all that money he saved in the offseason.  He tried to be cute and pretend he worked for the patriots and it didnt work at all.

He wouldn't have done that, but even if he said he'd hold out, you take that bluff.

He held all the power in regards to the tag. He could've skipped training camp, sat out a good portion of the season, etc Gettleman didn't think it was worth it.

For example when Hurney franchised Julius Peppers it was pretty clear he didn't want to be here, why force a 1-year agreement if both parties aren't happy?

The cap carries over. Just because you have the space doesn't mean you got to blow through it for the hell of it.

He gambled on the Steve Smith issue and he was right. Maybe he looked in the future and realized he didn't want a $75M future safety.

Gettleman has given players/fans a culture shock since he's been here but he believes in his plan.

If you listened to any of Josh's interviews in Washington it's clear that he didn't want to be the 3rd most popular panther, Keeping the tag on Josh could have been disastrous. Peanut was done, Bene looked like he loss a step, There was no way around it.

The organization didn't want him to be the 3rd most popular panther. He said it's strictly the Cam and Luke show and they aren't cool with anyone else getting spotlight.

Cam is a MVP, Luke was a DPOY and Josh was a All-Pro Player there is nothing wrong with being the #3 panther, Chris Bosh was a hell of a player but he wasn't getting top billing over lebron or wade

we have a lot of key injuries on this team. this board undervalues guys and is blind to see how bad we are without them.

oher has been out for like 3 weeks now. that's our starting LT gone. the OTs are struggling mightily because newsflash, they're out of position and backups.

vernon butler has also been out for like 3 weeks. butler gave major hustle and was disruptive in the middle. he also kept our DT rotation refreshed with higher talent.

bradberry left early against ATL and has also basically been out 3 weeks now. bradberry is a stud. he's physically more talented than josh and appears to be more coachable and smarter. JB can run with julio, he may not have the experience to shut him down yet, but he can hang. without bradberry our DBs have been exposed.

stewart was out. it's obvious, he's a major key to the offense. his absence left our offense anemic. today we had WR drops and our OTs out of position still suck, but our O was pretty good most of the game.

before these guys went out, we were 1-2 and really close to 2-1 or 3-0. add in cam missing a game, and this team has not been able to properly re-gel. remember, bradberry was in with the 1s all summer long. he's the most important DB we have right now. butler got plenty of PT and i can guarantee putting him and KK in the middle on 3rd downs is a lot different that Star or Love beside KK.

right now i think Butler and Bradberry will become starters on this team long term. no idea about Worley or Sanchez. Worley looked better sharing time with McClain as the #2 CB.

Gettleman could have done things better this off-season. probably smart to leave the josh thing alone. i'm fine with not paying KK last summer. we should have brought in a vet at DE and S/CB. but the fact is we took a chance on our unproven guys. as Harper said, he understood why we wanted to give Boston a chance. Boston's a great guy and a hard worker and a team first player. he has made nice plays in the past. but now we know for sure that he isn't a starter. gettleman really believed one of the udfa DEs were going to make another step. just like the WRs in 2014, none of them did.

on top of the above, a bunch of bullshit has hit the team this year. injuries are the top thing, but the ref's/NFL's disrespect for Cam, the timing of the schedule, and the protests in charlotte have hit this team in all the worst possible ways at the worst possible times.

gettleman hasn't ruined the team. hopefully everyone gets healthy over the bye and this team can hit the reset button. things are really bad right now, but we are a fighting team and we won't be giving up this season. for now, best case scenario is the players go out and heal up and find themselves again and we make a run for a wild card slot. worst case, the team stumbles through the season and we have the luxury of reloading with some major talent at important areas. getting a top OT or DE this year could be incredible. plus a legit future RB or TE and a S. this team could find lots of missing pieces.

My thoughts exactly.  Nice post.

Coming off a 15-1 season is not the time to be rebuilding entire position groups

It was never built in the first place, you can't keep putting off building it just because you made the Super Bowl the year before. Last year has nothing to do with this year or afterwards, and the moves this offseason were necessary and for the best. Unfortunately other questions and issues have popped up that aren't personnel issues which puts more on DG's plate.
