Could we be planning to trade Julius Peppers?

peppers salary is the bare minimum that a team would have to pay. don't forget that the team would have to give up something pretty big to have the honor of holding his contract.

not only would there be the money end of it, they would have to give the panthers either a really good player or one or two first round picks. basically, you have to find a team that is more _________ than the panthers.

He's not going anywhere.

I believe his agent protested the Franchise tag and fluffed up the Moving On story so that we would have to play with him getting $1 million+ per game. It put money in Pep and the agent's pockets guaranteed, something they weren't going to get on the free market.

I really believe it was a case of "Don't throw me in the briar patch B'rer Fox!" Haynesworth had already gotten Wonka's Golden Ticket for the year on defense and this will leave it until 2010 to be decided.

I don't believe Pep wants to go very badly. He played lights out against Philly in front of the home crowd and then turned in a meh performance against Atlanta. In short, he's playing like Pep always does: excellent in most games, lackluster in a handful, and freaking astounding in a couple (still to come hopefully).

In other words, looks like he feels at home right where he is on the Carolina line.

You can't trade a franchise player, been discussed ad nauseum

I don't think that's accurate, though. From everything I have been able to find, the team just cannot negotiate with a franchised player, I have not seen anything that says they cannot trade him. And while it has been talked about quite a bit here, it has only been speculation by board members, as far as I know, nobody has provided anything that supports the idea a franchised player cannot be traded.

Right. They "franchised" him a long time back IIRC...he just didn't sign the tender until the last moment before training camp as to limit the Panthers trade options. They couldn't trade him without his signing of the tender. Now that he's signed...I don't see a problem...but he does have some say in the matter.

No team (including the team that franchised the player) can sign a franchise player to a long-term contract after July 15th of a league year. So this pretty much negates any trade scenarios. The 49ers tried to trade draft picks for Lance Briggs in 2007 (Chicago's franchise player) but the league rejected the trade for the reason stated above.

I'm not sure about this either. The language I have seen only states that a team that franchises a player cannot negotiate with that player on a long term contract from mid-July until after the season. I haven't seen anything that says a team that aquires a franchise player cannot negotiate a long term deal with him.

With all this said, I do not think there is any chance we trade Peppers before the season ends. First of all, we don't have anybody ready to step into his spot (Brown is not ready and Johnson has not stepped up as much as we hoped). Also, whether or not he can be signed to a long-term contract by another team, I don't think there is anybody that has the money available to absorb the cap hit from taking him on. Well, maybe TB, but they wouldn't be an option anyway.

I have a dumb question. Can the Panthers just cut him now? I mean just release him and sign someone else? Sorry to be so illiterate.

Once he signed his tender, his salary became guaranteed. So if we did cut hm, we would still have to pay him his entire salary.

Thanks, I was afraid that would be the case. Well, I guess we're stuck with him. Hurney really put all his eggs in one basket this time so to speak. I have a feeling that it may cost someone their job at the end of the year unless they make the playoffs.
