14 turnovers is the problem. Not Shula.

Will a team be perfect and never turn the ball over in a season? No.

Why do we act like the offense will be perfect when it comes to turnovers?

So, the 2015 Panthers turned the ball over 19 times. They only had 5 turnover free games. In the first 8 games of the season, the offense turned the ball over in 7 of 8 games. The Panthers won all of their multiple turnover games.

The 2016 Panthers have turned the ball over 14 times. Their 1 win was a multiple turnover game - 4 turnovers. The other 4 turnover game was the Bucs, which the Panthers controlled until the final drive of the Bucs in the 4th quarter.

Turnovers resulting in a loss are not indicative of the offense losing the game. Turnovers are always on the shoulders of the defense. They must not give up TDs or long drives following a turnover.

The 2015 Panthers defense faced 17 drives following a turnover. They gave up 1 TD. They forced 5 punts and 2 turnovers. That is a 7 win to 1 loss ratio for the Panthers defense.

The 2016 Panthers defense faced 11 drives following a turnover. They gave up 3 TD. They forced 2 punts and 0 turnovers. That is a 2 win to 3 loss ratio.

The defense's inability to stop teams following a turnover is the big difference from last season to this season. The other factor is the defense's inability to create turnovers. The Panthers led the league in creating turnovers last season with 39 - an average of 2.4 turnovers per game. The Panthers defense is currently averaging 1.4 turnovers per game and is on pace for 22 turnovers.

Does the offense need to take care of the ball better? Yes. Has the offense been constantly mailing in pick 6's and short fields? No. It is on the defense to keep the opposing team from putting up a TD following a turnover.

To underline this point, the Broncos posted 31 turnovers by their offense last year. The Broncos defense countered that with 27 turnovers.

The constant is that the SB teams generate 25+ turnovers with their defense. Most are between 30 to 40 turnovers on defense. SB offenses range from 15 to 30 turnovers. The key is that the SB defense not only generates turnovers, but they win more than they lose on drives following an offensive turnover.

I hope this clears it up. The turnover aspect to the game is highly dependent on the defense.

14 turnovers is a problem. Shula's play calling is a problem. There are multiple problems unfortunately. You shouldn't discount one problem and pin everything on another. One thing I will say though, is that turnovers are going to happen, and you must deal with them.
