It's Clear--Complete Rebuild Around Cam, Luke, & Olsen

Offensive weaknesses were exposed late last year between Atlanta and Denver games.

It doesn't appear anything was done to address those exposed weaknesses.

The D lost some key personnel/leadership from last year that have yet to be replaced.

Coaching staff seems to be surprised by the resulting play.

I'm most disappointed in the sloppy play.

no way dude. we're close, we just need a tune-up. this whole thing can be fixed in an offseason.

So many chicken littles around here.

This season has started off awful, but it can all turn around with a win against the Saints and a much needed bye week.

I would expect to see threads like this at the end of a 4-12 season, not going into week 6. There is so much football left to play and I've seen enough crazy things just in my 20 years of watching football to know this season isn't over yet.

I just want gettleman to have a better draft.. picking what is obviously needed for the team instead of BPA..

He did things differently the last draft and no one seems to say it.  I don't get why peeps just can't be upfront about our GM's strategy.

We went BPA round-1 staying true to supposed form but then went ham on CBs, trading up, minimizing rookie impact.  I don't want to judge these guys too soon but this draft is not showing up year-1 and good one's do.  (speaking overall, Bradberry looks legit barring a hopeful upward growth trajectory).  When you trade up, more is at stake than getting a BPA and we took a big bet going for a unit.  Everything else-meh.

You get this good, we should demand that top quality annually.  I want to be rid of the latter Capers years that have somehow been stuck in our mentality minus a few seasons here and there (96, 03, 05, 09, 2013-16 pending)

Well the issue obviously is that the team did not need a DT and really needed talent at OT and DE.. and there were some really talented OT and DE still on the board.. I just don't agree with the BPA strategy when it obviously doesn't help the team when the team needs it the most.

Thanks for the kind words.  I'm speaking both staff and personnel...and we've had the same HC since day 1 with Cam.

So, what is different from the 15-1 team?

Coaches? Nope. They worked just fine - even if I disagree with their philosophy.

The Panthers lost their 3rd down slot WR who was decent at separating quickly and finding pockets in the defense within 8 to 10 yards. Cotchery out and Philly Brown has taken over the role. Brown has been inconsistent and continues to have trouble getting open quickly off the line.

Jared Allen out. Kony Ealy steps up and continues to struggle.

Secondary completely changed. Norman, Tillman, and Harper are gone. Coleman is moved from his strength position at FS to a position he struggles at - SS. Bene is not allowed to recover and stay at nickel. The experience and talent level that is lost with these move is a move that could rock the moves they made to solidify a 15-1 defense. They are replaced with 3 rookies, a struggling safety in Boston, Coleman swapping to SS while unable to take on and get off blocks, and a CB who has already been cut from this team in Robert McClain.

Dwan Edwards and Kyle Love replaced with inexperience and ineffectiveness in Butler and Soliai.

Yes, upgrades could have been made at OT and DE as well, but these were not factors in what led to the decline of the team in one off season. The 4 areas listed that were gutted by the front office has led to Star and KK staying on the field longer, being doubled more often, and not having a DE capable of moving OL off of them. Containment and awareness at DE has suffered. LBs are having to cover more field and focus on the run less due to covering the underneath for the weak DBs. The secondary is allowing more big plays in the passing game and contesting fewer passes. The offense is struggling on converting 3rd downs with the passing game due to receivers taking too long to get open.

These moves to gut positions and refuse to adequately replace those players falls squarely on the shoulders of the front office.

This is why the Panthers are struggling.

I think looking for talent at Tackle, DE, and safety is all that needs to be done...and RB but I think thats easier than thinking of a complete rebuild. Betwwn FA and draft pick its not that impossible to do.  You dont need all of them to be All Pros.  I miss using savy veterans in the secondary.

Superb Owl hangover. No reason to jettison everyone, even on the coaching staff. Things may very well right themselves in a few weeks. If not, then next season the team will be contenders again, if management keeps its head on straight and doesn't hit the panic button.

There are a lot of younger players getting a big dose of medicine right now and wisdom will come from it. If you toss them all on the ash heap, then we'll never benefit from this.

This is my thought as well.  We are in pretty good shape long term....as long as Cam stays healthy.  Having a competent QB is half the battle in this league, have a great QB and you should be in the playoffs every year.  Cam, Ron, Shula, DG.....everyone is having a bad year it seems, lets see how they rebound. (as to the rebounding this season, I have my doubts, but maybe next)
