Panther fans last night

<Rant> In my experience, all things being equal, discretionary income has an indirect relationship with emotional commitment up to a point.  Less money to be spent, either on a game-by-game basis or extrapolated to a season or even larger to PSLs, increases fan passion while also increasing expectations (i.e., ROI).  This occurs up to a certain point at which the relationship stops because an individual's play money has grown relative to lifestyle to a point of indulgence.  That comfort conveniently permits someone to fly the 'diehard 'flag, but it doesn't make it so, just as a fan who sells for the money or stops attending altogether, doesn't make them a fair-weather or bandwagon fan.  I love the team and would never sell.  That said, it only takes up a certain % of what I'm working with, so it's listed in my frugality index.  And I can understand someone reprioritizing when wisdom calls for it (crashed economy etc), and making better use of their money.  </Rant>

Buddy at work dropped by my desk at 12:30p Monday afternoon and asked if I could go to the game in Charlotte.

Before I could say "no" (due to major work stuff), my manager turned to my buddy and said "YES", then looked at me and said "why are you still here?"

Rushed home for more Panthers supplies for the road trip. Found and booked a hotel, and avoided getting a traffic ticket on my way to (FINALLY!) get to a @RoaringRiot tailgate. After some much-needed NoDa brews and some tailgating grub, made my way to the seats in the uppers.

Yelled my head off. Slammed the seats. Yelled "first down" along with everyone else.

Texted back and forth with my buddies around the country, sent photos and said I was going to be "the loud one" on the TV broadcast.

And all the time -- even with the painful last play loss that brings back painful memories of seasons past -- the smile never left my face. I was simply thrilled to be at BoA and surrounded by fellow Panthers fans. To be able to witness the good (and the bad) in person. To soak in the stadium experience that all the PSL owners take for granted.

I don't get a chance to make it to BoA very often. But every chance I do get, I make the most of every minute, every second that I'm there.  And last night - was thrilled so many people stayed to the very very end with me, hoping for victory.

The game didn't have the final outcome we wanted on the field, but the overall impact of a single game can be far greater than what the scoreboard shows.

-

There are three aspects of the Panthers gameday experience for any fan:

a) The excitement of what's about to happen (whether it be just during a four hour drive from Atlanta to Charlotte, or all summer long while looking at your Season Pass booklets and imagining which games should be gimmees, planning the tailgate menu, the Halloween game outfits, signs, etc)

b) The excitement of the game itself

c) The memory of what transpired - studies and history shows that we always tend to blank out the bad things that happen and reinforce the good stuff. Yes, the team lost the game, but we got to hang out with good friends, enjoy some beautiful football weather, have some good laughs/beers/food at a tailgate, bond with family, OMG WHAT A GREAT PARKING SPACE!, got that hottie's phone number finally, the kids looked so cute, etc etc etc.

The point of all the above -- a fan is a fan is a fan is a fan is a fan. For me, the joy of running a last-minute trip to Charlotte for a MNF game will overshadow anything that happened on the field itself.

Was there of course to the bitter end. Not many Tampa fans at all. I will be there all season good and bad. After all even bad Panther football is better than no football at all.

All this does it expose the bandwagon fans for who they are. Losing like this just makes me remember how magical last year was.

There may be others.... but this is the first positive thread I have seen since logging on.  I too am disappointed in the start of the season and for a split second after yesterday's game thought about not watching next week.  Than the Panther fan in me spoke and said.... "what the heck are you thinking....."  1-4 or 4-1, it doesn't matter, you watch buddy, you watch every single game if possible BECAUSE these are "your" Panthers!  This might not be a SB season, but nothing feels better  (at least at my age) than a Panthers' win.  What would feel sweeter than a turnaround next Sunday against the Aints on our way to a 12-4 season.  KEEP POUNDING

I was pretty pessimistic going into last nights game, thinking the joint would be about 75% full and 50% full after the half. Panther fans, for the most part, filled the building and stayed until the bitter end. This is a huge shift for BofA stadium. Unfortunately the Panthers might stymie any momentum they had going with shitty play but I was impressed last night. Anybodyhome started a thread about not being emotionally and financially tied to the team any longer. Good riddance. Being emotionally and financially tied to this team is something I take pride in. It's only sports for Christ's sake. Anybodyhome is the type of fan that the new wave of fan is replacing. So if you were there with me last night until the end raising hell, cheers. Together we can make a difference and keep the pussies out of our joint.

I was really impressed with the fan base last night. Cheers SCP, I'm a new season ticket holder and come what may, I will have my ass in a seat for every home game. Hell, I even went to Atlanta last week.
