What happened to Funchess?

My question isn't what happened to Funchess, but rather what did he ever do to make the Huddle think he was going to be so great? We had posters trying to argue he was as good or better than A.J. Green during the preseason.

That never happens...lol..seriously, he needs to put on weight and move to TE...

i don't see him burning anyone in those pictures. One he's still working out and the db is on him, cam is already throwing the ball, another that says "burn" he's under the corner/safety but the db is in position to cut and intercept. Most are like that. It's easy to take a still frame of just about anything and make it look good or bad before further review.

If Cam delivers the ball where it needs to be (like many other top QBs in the league), then Funchess is as open as any WR in the league. You don't generally get a five yard buffer in the NFL.

Then watch film, nimrod. He clearly burned them for a good portion of the game. I swear, you guys are calling him slow, overhyped and a bust but the fact of the matter is he's not getting enough snaps and targets. We've got Ginn ahead of him. It's not his fault that our offense is so focused on Olsen and Benjamin.

Hell, Brown is getting open too.

A--- I didn't call him slow or a bust. I just don't see him the way some of you do at this moment.  Fans always get into the why not this or why that--- hopefully someone starts throwing at him only for whole games and we will see what happens then. Personally, and it's obvious,.. if he was burning people as you say and was as good,.. why aren't we throwing at him all the time?

I wouldn't be surprised if he ran the wrong routes, or something else was going on besides Cam and Derek just forgetting to throw his way since he's clearly the best on the roster,...

B-- I take offense to being called names and being part of some kind of cyber bullying.

Ill forward this on, and hopefully you can find a better way to debate than going that way,..

Shula, Benjamin and Olsen. There is a love fest between Shula and those two and I believe the progressions move from Benji, to Olsen, to the slot, to Funchess. In two WR sets the wide receivers are usually Benjamin and Philly or Ginn. It is obvious when Funchess is actually targeted that he is one of if not the best pure receiver on the team due to his athleticism and ability to use his soft hands in one motion.

I personally blame Shula for the lack of Fun in the offense and I believe that Funchess is generally the last target. The QB hasn't had time to get beyond his second option. They aren't making the correct pre-snap reads and moving off of Benjamin or Olsen near fast enough to get to Funchess's spot in the progression. Anyone who knows football, and professional football in particular, it isn't as simple as "he sucks" or "he slow". He had a solid rookie year, Cam had an MVP season, Olsen was one of the best in the game at his position, Stew was healthy, and Benjamin was injured.

The only thing that has changed with the offense is that Stew isn't healthy and Benjamin is. The two seasons that KB has played, we have started slow on offense and Cam clearly uses him as a crutch, or so I thought until last night. The entire offense is built around a relatively slow receiver which leads to slow developing plays which leads to our QB's missing other open receivers and getting their clock's cleaned.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and understanding this situation a little better.

In a nutshell, Shula has tailored this offense to the wrong player.

I remember last night that Funchess was in the slot and beat his man by 5 yards on a crossing route but DA decides to target Greg that is being blanketed by a S. Funchess would have been running for miles. I hope he does not get frustrated and check out but I feel the team is stunting his growth. I feel like he and Shaq Thompson are in the same boat, I see them make a big play then they are subbed out for the rest of the series.

Can someone explain to me how NFL QB's are unable to make proper reads and progressions?!?!?

Seems fairly simple.

On each play, you have a first, second, and third read etc.

After looking at Olsen and seeing him blanketed, why do you not go to the next read ie Funch who is wide open?

It is like Cam and Anderson can no make proper reads. Just stare down KB or Olsen and throw it in there hell or high water.

WTF

I agree with a lot of what you said, but I think this particular offense is tailored to the right person, which is Cam.  I just don't like the way the offense is ran(mostly due to RO), and I believe that the receivers aren't being used correctly, which I think you're alluding to with this statement.  I'd love to see us run an offense similar to Pittsburgh, and use the right personnel...

The offense is predicated on Cam running and using Benjamin to get coverage off of Greg. The issue is that I see far too many pass plays where Cam's first read is either Olsen or KB and that becomes far too predictable in obvious passing situations.

We have three options:

  1. Run
  2. Pass Play - Either Benjamin or Olsen are the first option for Cam
  3. Screen - To WR (usually Ginn), Misdirection to Olsen, to running back

The issue is that Cam never gets off of Greg or KB on pass plays because the pass protection breaks down or he simply holds the ball too long.

To draw coverage off of Olsen and use the full 50 yard width of the field, another receiver needs to be utilized as the first read on an actual route other than a screen.

He's not burning anyone, they just want Funchess to work out so badly they blame every but him. You can clearly see on the stills the DB are on him step for step, and some of them Cam already threw the ball and the DB's are reacting to the throw thus giving the illusion he was open.

I haven't seen Monday's game, but I did rewatched the last 4, Funchess is struggling mightily to get open. Even against SF sorry defense. Every single catch Funchess as made this season it was made in heavy traffic with a guy all over him. Against the Vikings they decided to shift help where ever Kelvin lined up and left Funchess alone one on one, Cam looked his way more than Kelvin that game but he was getting blanketed
