What happened to Funchess?

I would rather see him cover some of the bigger WRs/TEs in the slot on passing downs like he was used in the AZ playoff game as he shut Fitz out.

Thats fine and dandy when our D line is playing lights out and TD isn't hurt.  Shaq could make some much needed flash plays if given the opportunity.  TD could have time to get well and would have more energy to pass rush on 2nd and 3rd downs

The dude was wide open on multiple ossacions last night.  He toasted his man in atlanta everytime he was out there.

The Anderson run fumble.  Funchess ran a quick slant and was wide open at the stick stop stood there.  Stared at Anderson trying to get his attention, then Anderson took off running his way.  Blows my mind.  After the 1st quarter Tampa knew we were only targetting KB and Olsen.  The int to KB, there were 3 guys around him because they knew who it was going to.  The endzone pass to olsen, the were 2 guys around him because they knew who it was gojng to.

This soooooo fuging much.

The big reason Cam was so successful last year was how he spread the ball around.  Everyone talked about it including the national media.  Defenses couldnt focus on one guy.  Benjamin is back, Funchess has gotten better, Philly is still consistent Philly (reminds me of ricky p), Olsen, and Ginn.  Now we're back to focusing keying on one guy and easy for teams to read in much like last night.

He was definitely worth 3 draft picks.

I wish Gettleman would start using the draft to properly stock a team. The future looks very thin.

You could have had Funchess in the late 2nd round with 1 pick. If Funchess is gone, then just pick another WR. It is not like Diggs, Coates, Conley, and Lockett were off the board.

8 to 10 picks a year, or you can watch the team decay from a lack of talent over the next 5 years.

The Panthers could have landed Andre Johnson and Anquan Boldin to back up the youngsters in KB and Funchess with Ginn as a situational threat. Philly Brown and Brenton Bersin need to go and never come back. If the Panthers have a 3rd down WR with Cotchery gone, it is Bersin. That is not good, and they do not use him on 3rd downs. They seem to be forcing Brown into that 3rd down WR position, but he is not consistent enough to take that role.

Philly Not Consistent????? would have to disagree.. he's been consistent since last year excluding pre-season..Funny thing is even the commentator said so..(b4 the trip/fall....West Philly west Philly).

There have been 16 receivers targeted on 3rd down since 2014.

Care to guess who the bottom 3 are in catching the ball?

14. Philly Brown 43.8%

15. Ted Ginn 41.2%

16. Devin Funchess 38.1%

Of those bottom dwellers, Funchess and Ginn have only come up short 1 time for a first down when making the catch. Philly has come up short 3 times when making a catch on 3rd down.

Funchess has been the worst at converting 3rd downs when targeted, but Brown is a close 2nd.

The numbers do not lie.

Actually, not true in some of the earlier games, he had tons of snaps but very few targets.

I'm concerned that we're not spreading the ball around.  Don't seem to be throwing much to Funch or Brown, and not much to Ginn in the past 2 weeks either.  I'll try to post updated receiving targets & receptions tables later today if I can find a bit of time / energy

This is exactly what I have been saying since KB has returned...also I have to say at least DA tried to spread the ball around when cam is in he just looks for one target..not rembemering that this group of recievers helped get us to the SB last yeah and was yet laughed at..they were more on the same page if you ask me..just my op..

Apologies, haven't had time to read the rest of the thread (pp 4 - 7) due to work pressures.  But on my lunch break, I did catch up on my passing / receiving stats summary tables for the season to date.   Here's a quick one-word answer of what happened to Funchess:  FOZZY.

Fozzy is getting a high # of targets relative to his snaps because he is being very effective.  He has the best reception % on the team.  He's caught 19 of 21 targets...  Funchess just 5 receptions on 13 targets.  (Lowest reception % on the team).

But Funchess did make 2 of his 5 catches count - a TD vs. SF and a nice long 48 yard reception against ATL...

Here's the table for the primary receivers (players with a tiny # of targets like Stewart, CAP, Webb hidden to minimize clutter, but their stats appear in the bottom totals)

receiving summary weeks 1-5.png

Later I may try to graph the week by week snaps / targets / reception figures for the top 6 receivers...

THIS IS EXACTLY 100 PERCENT CORRECT!!!!

    • Right now there’s at least 6 teams with offers on the table to the Canes. Is one of those teams someone he told them he would sign with… dunno if anyone but Tulsky knows. 😂
