Yes, letting the vets go ended up hurting us.  But it's not the only thing.  The players we have SHOULD be able to win much more than they have this year.  That's what's so maddening.  We could have / should have beaten Denver & Minn.  If we had, we probably wouldn't have faced the debacles against ATL & TB ...

I know you are in to stats. So, when you look into the 3rd down dilemma and how having 2 of the 5 elements in place down from 3 of the 5 last season it will be clear to you.

50% of 3rd down plays for a team occur between 3 and 8 yards. That is the sustainability zone for an offense. This is why the Patriots are so consistent. They build around this for their offense. On average, teams will have 7 yards to go on 3rd down.

The Panthers 3rd down offense with 3 to 8 yards to go:

2011: 19th; 39.8%

2012: 7th; 47.1%

2013: 13th; 41.3%

2014: 7th; 45.3%

2015: 12th; 41.2%

2016: 27th; 33.3%

The drop off is apparent and is related to the lack of 3rd down options and edge protection. 40% is the mid line with the consistently productive offenses near 50% and the struggling offenses near 30%. Pair this with a negative turnover margin, and you have a losing team.

Thanks,  Interesting stats.  I'll try to look into this a bit further, and also see what I can dig up re: Cotchery's role in 3rd down conversions last year.

But little time this week.  Work is tough.  Boss on home leave in the US (he and his wife have new baby), and two colleagues here quite ill.  I'm struggling to keep my head above water.

I just want Gettleman to stop being such a wuss and do a press conference. He hides all year long, and for what reason?

He says it's because he doesn't want to be a distraction which does have some merit.

Though I do think when the team is imploding and he makes shocking moves like cutting Bene that he does need to step up and say something. Hell, there wasn't even a statement released about the Bene cut.

Really?  I was so busy last week and hardly around here or on Twitter (went like 48 hours with no Panthers news! shock!) that i totally missed that fact.  Wow.  Ouch.  Hate that when Bene was a good kid who showed some promise and came back from a really bad injury.  Still don't understand cutting him vs. benching him...

Nope, he trotted Ron out for his usual press conference to cover all Bene related questions and that was it.
