What They're Saying: Buccaneers vs Panthers

Since I didn't see my weekly "What They're Saying" thread this week from Igo (was disappointed I didn't see one this week), I decided to do the diligence of doing a quick scout of the pewter report, and my thoughts on some of their comments. This is nothing compared to Igo's, but felt we needed one of these, so I made a mini version.

This week, the Panthers are against the Bucs in a must-win MNF game. Being 1-4 and 0-2 in the division would not look good for the Panthers playoff chances, so tonight is definitely a must win to regain the momentum and swag we need. Of course, there are two sides to every story, as the Bucs themselves are looking for Jameis to regain his confidence and lose his turnover curse against a questionable Panther secondary.

Here's what they're saying:

On Derek Anderson Starting

Impending blowout. ... Not sure why anyone would believe the Bucs could/can win this game. We consistently get embarrassed in prime time, and when Derek Anderson starts for any team against the Bucs. Prepare for a beat down:

Panthers 31
Bucs 10

Derek Anderson is starting. No one way in hell we’re winning now. We had a better chance if they started Cam. Sad but true.

Well, Derek Anderson does have a 2-0 record against the Bucs after Newton's injury fiasco in 2014, dubbing him the nickname, "The BucFugger." Very fitting. He has a tendency to be quicker than Newton at quick passes, so that's something to look for tonight. However, he's had his problems, as you'd expect for any backup, but he's certainly starter material for a lot of other NFL teams. I doubt it'll be a blowout, but expect some pretty high scores from both teams, as both teams are capable of taking advantage of each other's weakened defense.

On the Panthers running game

Bucs To Face Depleted Panthers Ground Attack

Three times in 2015 – including Week 17 against Tampa Bay – the Panthers had to piece together their rushing attack when Stewart was unavailable. Four weeks into 2016, head coach Ron Rivera and the Panthers are navigating that reality once again. Even worse, they may have to do so without this season’s leading rusher in terms of carries and yards – quarterback Cam Newton (29 for 147).

He’s a solid football player who brings a power-style running game to us. He’s a very physical guy. And then a lot of respect kind of rubs off to the rest of the team. I think whenever you miss a guy like that, it shows. We had a nice little stretch going of 100-yard games and we didn’t get 100 yards last week rushing for the first time in about two-and-a-half years, so it was kind of disappointing. (Rivera)

“I think they’re a good football team, they’ve not run the ball as well as they would like,” he said. “Cam Newton has been their running back the last three weeks. I know Jonathan Stewart has not practiced this week. We’re not expecting to see him ..." (Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith)

Very true. Derek Anderson isn't much of a mobile QB, and he's sure as poo not Cam Newton, so expect us to be more of a passing offense tonight to fit that role. CAP and Fozzy will be the main running threats, and they can flash, but not as consistent. Without Newton, defenses won't have to worry much about the QB as much or gameplan for so. Our running game will be a question coming into tonight for sure, but the Buc's depleted DLine is something to watch for.

On the Bucs DLine

Our entire starting DL besides Gholston is going to be out tomorrow …we better hope Noah Spence somehow gets out there. We’d have to run a bunch of blitzes with our LB’s, safeties and corners cause there’s no chance in hell anybody else that we have that’s healthy is getting any type of pressure besides maybe Akeem Spence.

This is something worth looking at. McCoy is out for sure, McDonald looks to be out as well, as well as Ayers. They really have no one up front. This should make our OLine look quite fine out there, and heck maybe even Remmers at LT might have a decent game. They look like they won't have any pass rush anywhere on defense, so this is favorable towards our offense. We might look quite high octane out there tonight, even with Derek under the helm.

On the Panthers Secondary

If Jameis get's in a rhythm, I can see him taking advantage of the Panthers secondary with Mike Evans. They're the same secondary that gave up a ton of points to Atlanta last week.

Fair point. Mike Evans is a real good WR, and was my second round pick in Fantasy. His matchup against our secondary will be something. However, our secondary is not the same as last week. In fact, we pretty much changed every position back there with new starters. With Bene gone, Tre Boston a bench warmer, Sanchez, McClain, and Worley starting, and Coleman back to his position from last year, we've got a different look in the backend. Will it pay off? It all comes to tonight, but I'm personally not optimistic on that.

Anyhow, all in all, Bucs fans aren't too optimistic about tonight. Not many are confident in their chances, surprisingly, since our own fanbase basically considers the Panthers the Browns and have too many holes. I honestly doubt that we blow them out considering Mike Evans vs. our secondary, but our offense should be able to take advantage of literally no pressure from their DLine and get some big plays going. They've lost Charles Simms as well, so they have nearly no RB at all as well. It'll be a high scoring shootout, but we'll pull through.

Panthers 41

Bucs 30

The BucFugger goes 3-0
