Jerry Richardson may be why Dave Gettleman is cheap

Dave Gettleman went from an untouchable to Panthers fans to a disliked sports figure in about two weeks it seems. I check out a lot of social media and listen to WFNZ to get an idea of what my fellow Carolina Panthers fans are thinking.

After the Super Bowl the Panthers fans loved Gettleman to the point of being gleefully flippant about Josh Norman being shown the door. Now after the Panthers are an embarrassing 1-3 many fans are mad at Dave Gettleman.

The problem is the Panthers are cheap and always have been. Owner Jerry Richardson only spent a lot of money one time. That was after the lockout and Richardson got mad at being called cheap. That was when Marty Hurney suddenly started over paying people and ruined the salary cap.

Then Hurney gets fired and Dave Gettleman rides into town and starts clearing salary cap. The Panthers did manage to underpay Cam Newton and Luke Kuencly but are making it clear they won't pay much to other players.

The Panthers wanted Josh Norman bad enough to franchise tag him then suddenly let him go. Then it was presumed that the Panthers would re-sign defensive tackle Kawann Short. The Panthers could not reach a deal with Short and suddenly they have more salary cap space than the vast majority of NFL teams.

The Carolina Panthers could have kept Josh Norman for one more year under the tag. Then Norman would be here while the rookie corner backs got coached up for when Josh would have left in 2017. Unless Kawann Short has a really bad season the Panthers won't sign him next year and will slide in the rookie they drafted to replace Kawann.

I do think Dave Gettleman wants to win. I even think Jerry Richardson wants to win, but the Big Cat wants to win on the cheap. The problem of depending on Cam Newton to elevate Panthers like he did last year, is that they are getting him killed with cheap offensive tackles.

maybe i just don't understand how the salary cap works, but if you're under the cap, where does that extra money go?

To the players that deserve it, eventually.

A lot of people don't realize we have two top 10 guards up for contracts soon. Add to that a top 10 DT that wants top 3 money, an above average DT who is going to demand his fair share as well, and then a legit #1 receiver up for contract the year after that. So while, yes, we could have spent 14 million on Norman this season, it was no guarantee he wouldn't hold out, and even if we still had him, we wouldn't have won the past two games which we lost due to poor offensive production/special teams against the Vikings, and poor play from everyone but Andy Lee against the Falcons.

Norman is not a cure all for our woes. I'm not sure what is, but paying one dude 14 million on a one year contract isn't the best long term investment of the money that can go to other players.

Not true.  Only issue I have with JR is his loyalty to the league, which I feel like at times conflict with our best interest.  He wants to win.  He guaranteed a Superbowl win in our first ten years of existence and still hasn't got it yet, so I know he wants it.

I think the writer is looking to give DG a pass.  He's also shaping up his argument conveniently leaving out the faction of our fanbase that hated letting Norman walk and called DG out for it when and since it happened.  I think JR gave the staff and FO room to do what they thought was best to put us in a position to win it all this year after coming so close last year.  I think he found the moves, or lack thereof, questionable...  Then 1-3 happened.  Then last Sunday happened.  All of the bombast coming from DG made the spotlight on our struggles that much brighter and that won't go unacknowledged.

There were some really good FAs that could have been had for cheap.. one example is russell okung who signed with denver for a 1 year 5 million contract.. I just feel like gettleman has whiffed on some real opportunities to help the team win now.

The problem is, the money was there to be spent following a Superbowl loss with a talented core intact.  We should've went all in, and instead, DG gambled with being cheap and so far, it's not looking good.  It was the wrong year to make that mistake.

I've said it before in previous threads, no one actually knows who Gettleman went after in FA this offseason. We could have sent out offers to tons of guys who just declined, or accepted much higher offers elsewhere. We just found out we offered Whitner a contract when he was here but he didn't accept it. We offered one to Jacoby Jones a few years back and he chose the Ravens, we didn't know that at the time either. I think we offered one to that OT that signed with the Bucs back in 2014, who got a huge payday, then sucked horribly for them and was cut the next season. Did the same thing with Hakeem Nicks too.

Gettleman isn't going to overpay a player. We have learned that much. He has a value in mind for everyone and if they want more than that, they're welcome to get it elsewhere.
