Good Analysis: Our Defensive Pressure is NOT the Problem

wow, nice work OP.

i really think we bought into ourselves a little bit too much in that area, from front office down to players. bradberry had a good game or two and the legend of bene being a big play badass kind of lulled us into a false sense of security. suddenly bene gets exposed, bradberry gets injured, worley moves like a lamp post. and of course it was assumed harper could be replaced without really sacrificing anything.

i still think gettleman is a great GM, but this may go down as his first true personnel blunder.

In fairness, our starting defensive ends didn't have a lot last year.   Our leaders irt sacks were Short, Addison, and Davis.  Ealy was the only one who started at DE to make it to 5.

Everybody on the D Line needs to contribute sacks. Star was doubled the whole game. At least one of the DE's should have got a sack in that situation.

Dead horse, but GH jr used to terrorize Ryan and Brees. There is no excuse being a defensive end in this league and not get sacks.

We don't have Josh now so DE is soooo much more important going through the season and these veterans are at a combined 0.

Cam has very little time to throw, not just with the Broncos or Viking but Atlanta?!? We need CJ and Ealy to step up. It's totally fair for us to ask them to do so. They're not winning one on one situations. Star is fighting through double teams to get there.

I agree, but my point was the starting defensive ends didn't contribute much to the sack total last year.  If my math is correct, the four defensive ends that started for us last year (Johnson, Horton, Ealy, and Allen) had a grand total of 9.  So nothing much has changed in that regard since last year.

To be fair, if you think starting rookies in the secondary wouldn't go backwards, you're naive. But the results after they learn could lead us to multiple superbowl appearances in the future. It's just the present looks dismal. Gettleman has secured our future, but patience is definitely key in the present.

This was a big cluster by the GM. Far from securing the future he has set the team back. Let me explain to you how this man is a failure. He has ignored the OT position in the draft for 2 years. After the SB it should have been obvious that against top level defenses the tackles cannot hold up. It was the major reason we lost the SB. So what did the GM he did not acquire in FA or the draft. He doubled down on replacement level players at the tackle position.

The two other issues the team had IMHO were DB and DE., He decided to franchise Norman, that was an understandable position. Given Tillman was retiring and the inability to work out a long term deal doing franchise for at least one season while not ideal, would have helped the secondary greatly and helped rookies corners not having to cover Julio all the time. Making this decision to franchise norman helps setup FA so that you don't pursue other corners, you had a plan in place. Then he decides I am going to pull the tag, that  now changes your entire draft so now they are trading away picks and drafting so many corners hoping to hit one at least 1 of these if not 2.

Now in the draft, this draft by the way, the deepest at DT ever in the history of the draft. So what does Gettleman do, he drafts a DT with his first pick, ignores the OT position as well as DE. By pulling the tag on Norman he clustered his draft and they had to panic to draft a bunch of corners. Now could these corners turn out to be good.....possibly, but its a crap shoot really. Lets hope they do turn out but no one knows if they will. You had a known commodity in Norman that you could have tagged for a year and then let walk the next season. That would have given you an anchor in the secondary, someone the rookies could learn from and grow more easily into their roles. Then next season you can target some corners in FA and in the draft. You still have lots of unknowns in the secondary with lots of picks used and traded away. The GM is a putz, your window for winning in the NFL is often very small, you need to capitalize on those moments when you have player in their prime.
