Barnwell breaks down Panthers woes; spoiler: DBs are terribad

I told people that our D-line was getting pressure. I'm not crazy. The defensive backfield was awful as I've ever seen.

Pressure when we blitz which leaves the secondary exposed! It's the only way we can get pressure basically which means unless it's a sack or miss throw them it's usually a completion pressure or not! So basically it's irrelevant.

Rookie or not, theyre the problem and they didn't have to be.  I believe Bradberry is going to be solid, but Worley sucks, and i don't anticipate him getting much better.  And Bene cannot function on the outside.  That's not going to be fixed this season.  I dont have any answers for how to fix it now, other than to probably stop blitzing as much and drop more guys into coverage.  poo, at this point, I wouldnt mind asking Peanut to come back out of retirement lol because they are THAT bad.

I was thinking the same thing about Tillman...maybe even Finnegan (lol). Bene needs to stay in the slot where he functions best.

While I felt that the rookies would stuggle some this year, I do feel that we should have gone all in to get back to the SB this year. Josh would have made a world of difference yesterday...and the season for that matter.  Right now I'd be surprised if we made the playoffs. Heck if we finished 9-7 I'd be a little satisfied b/c we'd have at least finished over .500 in back to back seasons.

That's a fine thing to do when it works.

The thing is that more often than not, it doesn't work. And when it doesn't, you just mortgaged your future and got nothing to show for it.

I'm not interested in five to ten years of mediocrity just so we can blow everything on a 'right now' that is anything but guaranteed.

I disagree that we only get pressure when blitzing. Our D-line is not as horrible as people are trying to make it out to be IMO.

We're blitzing over 50% of the time. I don't think there's a team in the league doing that! I guess it depends if you think that's scheme design or if it's to mask the lack of natural penetration by the dline. I'm obviously of the latter. This is the worst line we've had in years in my opinion and I've seen some bad ones! That's not totally on talent, but CJ is done, Ealy is just not good enough consistently, Star is being bullied most of the time and KK is being doubled counting out figures in his head for his new contract! Whatever the excuse it's pretty darn poor. Just my view tho

lol Barnwell is about to cement himself at the top of the Huddle's hate list

I don't understand how a defense can go from bad to good just by CB play.

like I heard those guys don't matter at all.

nah I still love Barnwell....irrational fans might hate him but most of those seem to be sitting on your side of the fence- wanting to can the GM who turned our franchise into an NFL powerhouse and such

We wouldn't have mortgaged our future to go all in this year.

1) We could've kept Norman for another year.

2) Still could have drafted Bradberry in the 2nd round to groom as a replacement and maybe even Worley in the 3rd. If we'd kept Josh we wouldn't have had to use our 5th round pick on a 3rd corner (we already had Bene) and addressed a need or added some depth. Or we could have drafted Sanchez and used the 3rd round pick to address another position and left Worley on the board.

3) In theory I understand why we drafted Vernon Butler, but we didn't have to do that this year. I think he had less than 10 sacks in his college career. There is no guarantee he's going to blossom into a pass rusher anyway. Kwann could be franchised next year and Star has a fifth year option so We'd could've kept them both for 2017 and used that1st  pick to draft a RB (Derrick Henry was still there), DE, OT, or trade down to pick up an additional pick(s)

4) We could have considered bringing in a FA DE to aid the pass rush. We're almost 20 mil under the cap. Josh would've taken up about 14 which leaves 6mil. But had Johnson been allowed to walk the 3mil we're paying him leaves 9mil to bring in an impact DE or OT.

Hindsight is always 20/20 especially seeing how the first 4 games have played out. But, even when I was watching the draft I felt a bit uneasy when Butler was picked in the 1st round. I understood the Bradberry pick in the 2nd, was puzzeled by again when Worley was called in the 3rd. When saw Sanchez I was scratching my head. I knew if these guys didn't ball out like those 49er DB's from the 1981 class we'd be in trouble because we DON"T have a dominant pass rush to protect them.

Igo has stated that Norman was prepared to hold out and would not have signed the tag.

Naturally he can now say otherwise but I trust what he said before the tag was yanked more than I do after.

I had to step away for a bit, but just found some extra time to add a bit more to my reply to your post. There's no guarantee that we're being positioned to have a sustained run of competence.  Gettleman has had his share of questionable decisions (and I'm actually a fan of the guy)

1) I like Shaq Thompson, but was that really the best player when we picked in 2015? I know he's being groomed as TD's replacement but TD still has an A-game. AJ klein could be starting at the other OLB position and there wouldn't be much of a dropoff.

2) Did we really need to trade up a get Funchess in the 2nd round of that draft. Gettleman said he had a 1st round grade on him. But, he can't even crack the starting lineup over Ted Ginn or Philly Brown.  We could have got him later. Or not even drafted a receiver later and still get similar production. And if I'm not mistken, we traded up to grab him in the 2nd round (thereby losing a pick)

3) Kony Ealy was drafted in the 2nd round in 2014. Once again I seem to remember Gettleman saying he had a 1st round grade on him. REALLY?! I know it takes 2-3 years for DE's to blossom on average but if he doesn't start making a consistent impact soon I don't see how he could viewed as anything other than a failed pick.

4) Cam is in his prime and we still don't have a B-Level OT on either side. I think that's why our run game isn't as effective as it could be and why he gets hit so often by edge rushers.

5) Have we even drafted a safety other than Tre Boston the last 4 yrs? That position is going to have to be addressed soon.

I agree that we can't return to the Hurney days, but if we're going to compete year in and year out we're going to have to hit on the those 1 and 2nd round choices and spend a bit more on the marquee positions (CB, OT, DE).
