Is BPA the best draft philosophy?

Seeing how we came out the first quarter of this season, I started thinking about how any of our problems could have been fixed. I started thinking about our last 2 drafts and how many said we had the 'luxury' of going BPA in Shaq and Butler. Now, I am not dinging either of those players as Shaq already looks to be on the way to having a good career and Butler has the ability to become very good. However, I can't help but wonder if either of these picks were the right move. I know G-man stresses BPA, and I see that we have both ends of the spectrum here on what people think about him, but through the first 4 games I don't think there is any denying that we are EXACTLY who we thought we would be. Plenty of people saw the holes on the OL, at the DE spot, and in the secondary. However, many continued to support him. I was one of those people. However, looking at how we performed yesterday, I can't help but wonder... should we be drafting differently? Did we really have the 'luxury' or should we have been drafting to upgrade our weakest positions, even if it means reaching a little? The biggest problem I see now is that we have glaring holes and absolutely no way to fill them in the immediate future. What does the crowd say?

bpa is only good when you adress your needs in free agency and we had a mediocre freeagency not bring one damn starter to the table. trenton robinson , brandon boykin , gradkowski , solali all did nothing for us . i would rather get one solid starter then a group of bums that end up not doing anything and getting cut . Imo gettleman didnt stick to his philosophy this draft and reached for 3 straight corners which didn't work out . bradberry was not worth a 2nd rounder even though he has some potential but i dont see him being a star , whorely is a bust id take cason over him anyday and that says alot , sanchez another bum that cant even make the roster.terrible offseason = terrible season we see the correlation.

Well said. Dave needed to address our holes in FA and didn't.

Ah the old Gettleman BPA myth...

I don't know how you can call BPA a myth when speaking specifically about our last 2 first rounders. If I remember reading correctly, draft strategy says that your first-round draft pick should be an immediate starter. And outside of QB, our last 2 first-round draft picks have been at our (hands-down) strongest position. I don't think you can question that Shaq and Butler were far and away BPA to G-man.

I blame Gettleman and the coaches because he receives input from them. They overvalued guys like Rakim Cox, Arthur Miley, and Ryan Delaire. They thought with them having 2 full seasons on the roster that they would turn the corner. Also, after Ealy's monster SB performance they thought they had a 10 sack guy and a Charles Johnson on the cheap they would be loaded. Therefore, they took the risk of having 3 rookie CBs and a first time starter in Tre Boston out there. This offseason Gettleman must be shrewd in his spending. People point to the Broncos after the SB loss and signing Ware and Talib but don't forget teams like the Eagles,Dolphins, Bucs, and Saints that have spent big in previous years and came away with nothing.

There is no best draft philosophy. They all have benefits and weaknesses. Sometimes BPA works out well even when you have talent in those positions (Luke) and sometimes it doesn't, but more generally than not, you are more likely to get a stud at that position, it just might not be a position of need.

And BPA does not mean they will ignore any and all other positions just to get the highest graded guy. You take position, value, and other things into consideration. That's why we didn't draft Derek Carr at the end of the first round a few years back.

Opposite end of the spectrum is drafting strictly for need. That turns you into the Browns. There's a happy medium in there somewhere. All teams will have boom and bust picks. Can't get around it. You can only hope to add the best players you can get and have the coaches coach them up.

If you spend in free agency on major needs. This whole BPA in the draft bs is irrelevant! I mean if your a gm what makes your job easier when it comes to player personnel? Options surely! So if you sign players in free agency then you have little excuse to reach in the draft which is what we have done the last two drafts!

We haven't signed legitimate longterm guys in free agency and hoped our drafts would be enough to boost the roster, this has not happened this year. Going in free agency we needed CBs, DEs, OTs. We went into the draft and came out needing DEs, OTs, Safety's and legit CB (Bradberry will be ok longterm I think)..

This roster is stocked with some real bad players, so if the main guys don't get it right the competition and or replacements aren't going to push or make much difference. Boston, Bene, Worley, Ealy, CJ, Coleman are just not good enough. And not even having pro bowl calibre LBs and DTs can bail you out of that hole.

Gettleman didn't address the needs right now and that's across the board with the draft or free agency.
