How long can Cam survive Mike Shula?

Kevin Greene

Recommended Posts

He has had 1 truly good year, last year. I was hoping someone would take him because I knew he would regress. The 2 runs up the middle when we were down 21 are squarely on Shula, nobody else. Running on EVERY SINGLE 1st down, also shula. The read option is a powerful weapon but obviously they either need to do nothing but practice that with CAP or they need to limit it when Stew isnt in

I'll just post the same thing I posted yesterday BEFORE the game in the Joe Thomas thread in this thread:

"I find it hilarious that people are making fun of anyone that suggests we trade a 1st rounder for Joe Thomas. If DG could find a way to protect Cam that alone has more value than whoever DG drafts next year. Even if Thomas only has 3 years left in him.

This organization needs to be realistic about our window of opportunity. Cam can't keep taking these beatings and given DG's draft history I don't see how giving up a 1st for Cam's well being is a bad idea. I'd bet everyone here would be pretty excited if we drafted a real good LT prospect in the 1st round in next years draft.

With the proper protection Cam can go back to making everyone from the front office and coaching staff appear like geniuses as they continue to short change him on the offensive side of the ball."

Why did I re-post my post? Because 90% of you NEED to understand this isn't about "Cam surviving Shula" this is about Cam surviving Gettleman.

Shula can't make tackles out of Oher, Remmers and who ever else Gettleman gives him. You guys want quick short passes? We don't have those quick shifty WR's to throw them too. Philly and Ginn couldn't shake a pilon if needed to. So before everyone continues to pile on Shula (who I hate too but that's for another time) you need to realize the problem is higher up. 4 years it's been now and we're STILL sitting here talking about protecting our franchise QB!

4 YEARS! Let that sink in...

Or maybe anderson doesnt stand there like a deer in the headlights and take monster shots because he cant read a defense

They weren't blitzing like they had when Cam was in..they were not threatened by anderson..Can you see or read..lol

I found this interesting last night while watching the Steelers game. They apparently let Bruce Arians go because he would not change the offense to be more quick release throws by the QB. Big Ben was getting destroyed by holding the ball too long so the new OC made him throw quick strikes. I feel like Cam needs to incorporate this into his game. He can still do everything else he does but he just needs to mix in quick throws in 20-30% of his plays to keep the defense on their feet

Ok someone explain how shula is stubborn and won't change anything when cam is in the game but suddenly changes when da is in? In my opinion that points to cam being partly to blame too. I love cam, but contrary to what about half the huddle thinks, he can and does make mistakes sometimes like everyone else. I've seen shula get cussed many times when the play was obviously an audible and when there is an open guy short but cam opts to pass him up. Sometimes when you have a great qb he will think he can do more than he actually can and gamble. Its the nature of the beast. I in no way think shula is the best oc and I am really indifferent to him but I think Its hard to pin it all on him.

Now where the coaches are really failing is with the teams discipline. There is no way that the team should be committing so many stupid penalties. I don't know who to blame for that but somebody needs to do something.

The difference wasn't Cam, it's the stupid read option! Enough of it, it's 2011 all over again. Line up and play football..none of the RBs outside of Stewart even know how to run the option! And every time we run we have to choreograph it with an extra lineman.. just horrible horrible play calling

Amen. Its a joke and it hurts the rb. I have no idea why an OC wouldn't want to do normal pro-style play-action based offense with Cam. The RBs would benefit from not getting the ball flat footed or moving laterally and Cam would be ridiculous with the added threat of taking off after a fake hand off or a bootleg, if he sees an open field.

Because the gameplan was changed to fit DA's strengths. Those quick releases were called for him. When Cam did it, we had a good drive. But in typical Shula fashion, he abandoned what worked. Also helps that the defense was playing prevent. Cam makes his mistakes but Shula is calling the plays. I think these short quick releases is something Cam needs to do all the time. Sad to say, I don't think he trust his coordinator, his coach, his line or himself right now.

I'm with you 100% here.  I love having Cam as our QB and would not trade him for anything; however, too many people on here think he can make zero mistakes.  I think our problem on offense is 50/50 between Cam and the offensive line.  Sometimes the Oline breaks down and other times Cam just holds onto the ball too long.  This takes the whole offense out of any semblance of a rythm.  The penalties also have plain out hurt.  The team has completely negated some solid plays through penalties.

Seeing the Huddle try and intelligently discuss football after a loss is like watching a monkey jump a football...slightly amusing but really more sad and pathetic than anything else.

The blaming everyone except Cam for his bad play has gotten ridiculous.

Everybody is playing bad including Cam but we can't depend on Cam play as the reason we win or lose. Where's the run game? Cam yet again is our leading rusher, we've had 1 game where our RB ran for 100 yards, and Stewart is always hurt. I miss the days our QB can hand off the ball to a 1,000 yard back and let the run game go. Defenses aren't even stacking the box against us, there's no play-action.

    • Of the options you listed a trade back most entices me particularly if we stay in the top 15. However if you made me pick I'd take Jalon Walker
