I think there are rules that you can't keep a guy on the IR who is healthy... I forget the details, but I think they need to be injured at least 6 weeks for them to stay the season on the IR.  If they pass a physical at some point less than the 6 week mark, they are waived, I believe.

Probably want a true season ending injury, teams do that all the time to stash young players by putting them on IR with a phantom injury. He probably balked at the idea and asked to be released to make someone else's roster.
