Lack of Pass Rush - Due to corners?

Yep, everyone was on the "Norman is overrated, our front 7 is the only reason he's any good and we could put anyone back there and have no problems" bandwagon, but it was pretty clear that this could potentially be a major issue and it has been. So many of our sacks last year came as the result of delayed blitzes which means the secondary has to hold the coverage for an extra beat for the rush to get home.

It's not just Norman by the way. Harper has really been missed. As the SS, he was able to use his instincts to take away short, quick routes. He was liable to get absolute torched in deep coverage but he was very solid for the first few seconds. And Peanut was extremely good last year and the three of them allowed Coleman to just play as a center fielder which he excelled at. Coleman has not been great at SS.

This time last year with Norman, Harper and Peanut the secondary was getting nickle and dimed by the other McCown and Ryan Mallett.

You have absolutely no evidence that Coleman has been bad at SS.

What?  Who is applying logic on the huddle?  Aren't our players just supposed to git gud, demand that the opponents give up because we are ripping their spleens apart, and have all the stats?  Just all of them???

Now what would people be saying if we had our young corners pressing each pass play and getting roasted repeatedly?  "What trash corners we have!  Shoulda kept Norman!  Gettleman sucks!"  Well, many of y'all are already saying that.

it's a good thing actual football people made decisions for our team and not the fans.  It's a long season, and our young corners have been playing pretty well, not great, but better than expected as rookies.  We just need our offense to carry a heavier load to force our opponents into having those longer drops.  Score more and force them to play catch up.

Maybe that comes Sunday....maybe, hopefully...

Nickel and dimed by the Saints yes, but that was without Luke in underneath coverage and most of the quick hitters were across the middle where he roams and the Saints always do that to us. Sean Payton has McDermott's number. We only got nickel and dimed by the Texans once we went to prevent defense at the end of the game and they made their comeback.

Never said Coleman was bad at SS. I said he wasn't great. He's a decent SS. He was better as a FS.

In other words we've gone back to the defensive scheme from Rivera's first few years here when we were 6-10. We were all pulling our hair out at the soft coverages for a long time while people like EJ Manuel drove down the field on us.

Exactly.   We really needed Norman another year, and I wish egos on both sides could have agreed to at least a year.

This is why top cornerbacks are worth the money.  Norman's age, maybe not, but at least a year rental.
