what more could he have done this offseason?

Go look at the last 5 or 6 SB winners, they all had at least one big names acquisition in free agency. We don't and had the chance to do so this off season.

For whatever reason we seem hesitant to sign or trade for other players from different teams.

Name the player the team should have pursued and was it realistic?

Mitchell Schwartz or Kelvin Beachum  both major upgrades of what we have now,

Travis Benjamin or Mike Wallace would have fit perfectly in our receiving core. Both were affordable

He did tag him, Norman wanted a long term deal that wasn't going to happen in carolina. I doubt a team would have gave away a 1st round or 2nd round pick + making Josh Norman the highest paid CB in the league.

Isn't this what we wanted, a GM with a backbone. Gettleman isn't going to be bullied (see steve smith) and he's going to do whats best for the team.

Who should he have brought in?

Just because you couldn't get a first round pick out of it doesn't mean you let him walk for nothing.

Letting him walk at the last minute clearly impacted the draft and put us behind in FA

we could of found a DE, TE, S, CB, RT, RB/FBthat would be an upgrade this offseason....at least one spot.

What did we do this offseason? To get better?

The defense is fine. When you play matchup zone, there are going to be some holes an offense can exploit; that's just the nature of the scheme. Pass rush, while not looking like 2013, has been neutralized somewhat by offenses (specifically Denver and Minny) getting the ball out on quick 3-step drops. I'm actually more concerned with the DTs than I am with CJ or Ealy - a big part of our DL pressure last season was KK wreaking havoc on the inside. That aspect has been missing so far this season (not sure whether KK is more injured than the team's let on or if offenses are just paying more attention to him after his breakout last year).

The more concerning aspect has been the offense. In its past 4 games (including the Super Bowl) we're averaging 21.5ppg, and that's only because the O dropped 46 points on a 49er defense that will likely rank in the bottom 5 of the league (technically, since one of those was a defensive score, we're actually averaging 19.75ppg). Last year, when the offense was good to put up 27-30ppg, a bend but don't break defense predicated on turnovers was more than adequate to get the job done. If the new normal for the offense is to only average ~21ppg (not to mention put the defense in bad spots with regards to field position due to boneheaded turnovers), then the defense as currently constructed is going to be a lot more stressed and less effective.

People are just expressing their opinions on a FOOTBALL MESSAGE BOARD.  It's what you do.

And it's my opinion that.many whom are harping that the team ignored certain positions, is complete bs.

You are correct, everyone is entitled to their opinion, regardless of how misplaced it is.

Norman didn't want to be here, do you really want a disgruntled Josh Norman?

Gettleman isn't a big trader, why would he start now after a super bowl appearance.

The last time the panthers were active in early free agency was 2011, so not being active in free agency wasn't new.

Norman did want to be here but that a water under the bridge. I trust our gm tho

The snapshot of the last 4 games only takes in playing really good defenses 3 times so of course our ppg will be down.  We didn't play many good defenses last year.  I have to agree with Rivera, when looking at those 4 games it has been mistakes like penalties and turnovers (mainly by the offense) that have lost us the 3.  Carolina has given up 70 total points with year.  32 points were given up on drives against the defense.  32 were off turnovers given up by our offense (including the safety).  Of the 24 points scored by Denver in the super bowl, 15 were off turnovers.  That's not including special teams mistakes either.  Clean up the mistakes and this team will be back to normal.

The panthers are likely getting a third round pick for Josh Norman.

I'm sure Gettleman and his staff went through the pros and cons before removing the franchise tag, he's not a amateur.

He pursed Jared Cook, He had his choice of draft able DE's and he passed on them. Drafted 3 CB's, one is a starter and playing pretty good round now. OT's picked in the first round are not slam dunks look at Luke Joeckel (2nd pick) he was bad at LT now the jags have a below average OG who they used the number 2 pick on. Once again i'm sure Gettleman "kicked the tires' on OT options but decided to keep the OT's who were for the most part last season pretty good.

Coming off a super bowl appearance I didn't expect a lot of free agent acquisitions I believed the return of Kelvin and Kony (coming off a great performance in the super bowl) would do wonders, I still have that hope.

The Panthers could easily be 3-0 right now, we're acting like jags fans right now with all this panic. Relax.

Thanks for providing names. I don't think adding a WR was realistic with Kelvin, Devin, Ted, Philly locked in already. Panthers are still at heart a 'Running team'.

The OT options really depends on how they fit the scheme, maybe that's the reason the team didn't pursue either of them
