The Problem with Charles Johnson Coming Back

Panthro

Recommended Posts

Charles Johnson coming back at a reduced rate allowed the Panthers to feel adequate at the DE position going into the year. What a steal! If he hadn't been resigned there would have been more focus on improving that position in FA and in the Draft. Forget the OT position...give me DEs

Pass rush cures all issues and masks a young or bad secondary. That is why 87 year old Terence Newman and the little 87 centimeter Munnerlyn owned us yesterday.

Agree! Resigning him and overhyping Ealy masked the truth that this pass rush hasn't been great since the 12-4 season in 13..

I was surprised that g-man didn't go for a DE in either free agency or the draft, the cap space was there with or without CJ being resigned..

This basically boils down to him believing too much in what he has, overhyping Ealy, Cox, Miley, Delaire (listen back to his combine interview) and believing CJ has anything left...

He obviously like us fan saw we had an issue last year by trading for Allen in some desperate hope to spark the pass rush but felt comfortable with what we had to enter the new season.

One of the biggest mistakes he's likely made since being gm IMHO..

The had one offensive td, one offensive drive for a fg, and one fg after a interception on our side of the field.  Defensive line, secondary, linebackers etc... was not the problem.  In fact, it really hasn't been a problem for the last two games.  Penalties, sacks (being on the receiving end), special teams screwups, turnovers, etc... are the problem we are having right now.

How anyone can say the pass rush isn't the problem is just WOW! The only time we get pressure is when we blitz. Our ends are bad! Qbs may not be putting 30 on us but there dinking and dunking and flipping the field time and time again. We haven't had a competent pass rush for awhile now.

If the entire d-line isn't getting pressure why blame one man was the point.

Vet leader and a guy who hasn't shown much in the past three seasons. Hard to be down on a kid like Ealy although he is too highly thought of by our coaches, he's too inconsistent. Where I agree with you is the whole line is getting nothing as a unit! But kk and star get a pass in many people's eyes.

No one is saying its not a problem.  But compared to the offensive issues, the lack of pressure is a relatively minor problem.  The vast majority of the points scored against us in the last two weeks have been due to turnovers and special teams screwups.  Our ability to pressure the passer is middle of the road for the NFL.  Not great, not terrible.  On the other hand, the turnovers, penalties, and sack issue put us near the bottom of the league.

Also, the reason teams dink and dunk is because it usually significantly reduces the number of sacks a team gets.  Hard to get pressure on a 5-7 yard completion, even if you are blitzing.

To me there seems like no pressure at all. Qbs getting 3-5 seconds to read and throw. I mean we've played sieman, gabbert and bradford. Hardly brady, rogers and Big Ben! I can't see where the turnovers are coming from, and how we get field advantage, we rarely get off the field straight away.

I can't disagree with your comments on the offense though! In my eyes there are a few worries not just one or two.

He was solid in the playoffs. Watching the difference between the viking dline and the panthers yesterday was staggering but the vikings  offense played to their strength while the panthers offense played right into the vikings hand.
