The Panthers were on top of the league in 2008 with 2 1000 yard rushers. They won the division and were expected to compete for the SB. The thud in the playoffs is what is remembered, but that was still a very good season.

2009 was a poor season, and 2010 was a lame duck throw away season that we all knew was in the dump because of Jerry Richardson and his crusade.

1 bad season and 1 tank season. I am not quite sure why you think the Panthers were struggling for several years prior to Cam Newton being drafted.
