Cam Newton Is Just A Football Player

The problem is if white people are uncomfortable with what's being said, it has to be changed or quieted down. It's better for that side of Cam stays silent on what's happening in his own backyard to his own people. Any red blooded black man feels that stress and that fear right now, him included. We won't ever accomplish anything because the white side feels these are just a few bad apples and justify certain thing. While we are over here begging and pleading for the same privilege that you all have.

Look, I'm certainly not trying to argue that black people haven't been oppressed.  They have, and still are in a lot of cases.  I had this same conversation with a friend/co-worker yesterday, who's black.  Just like I mentioned to him, and have kept saying here, nothing is happening right now, except furthering the division.

Do you not see the conflict in your statement?  You're stating that the whites are taking the few bad apples, and lumping the whole race into the same category.  You're doing the exact same thing within that same sentence.  Not all of "the white side" feels that way.  I don't, and my ass is as white as high speed copy paper.  I want nothing more than equality among all races.  We need to be "a people," not "my people," and "your people."

Honestly, truthjuice, I don't know how to help make this happen.  I don't have a ton of money to put towards a movement to make a change.  I don't have a platform in which to voice my support for equality.  I think a damn good start could be right here on the huddle though.  I feel like it's ridiculous that I log in here every day, and see the back-and-forth on this subject, when this small community of fans could unite, and be one voice.

We all come in here and set aside our differences of race, political affiliations, religious beliefs, etc., and are a single group of people, in support of a freaking football team.  Why the hell can't we do that for something as important as this?  Maybe we could make a difference together.  It's not going to happen if we keep pushing the "you blacks are doing this," and "you whites are doing that."  It just won't.  That's keeping the barrier(division) up, and keeping it strong.

Any white person, that's not had their head in the sand, knows why black people are in the position that they are right now.  Black people were treated like animals by some of our ancestors, and there's some people that won't let go of the "racial superiority" that was created due to that.  There's no white person that will ever feel the way a black person has, because they've never been submitted to that kind of treatment, which still exists today, to a different degree.  It's time to wake the fug up, and it's time for people to have a functional heart(aka: really give a poo) about people, regardless of their skin color.  We can start right here, right now, quit the back-and-forth, and come up with something together.

as much as I like Cam as our QB I can only feel but so sorry for him in this case.

Since he got into the league he has had aspirations of being more than just a football player. Most football players want to be more than just football players..when you put yourself out there like that this is the kind of scrutiny you're gonna get.  People are going to want to know where you stand on things. Of course there's no way he saw all of this happening with America right at the time where he is ascending to the top figure in the NFL but its his cross to bear for wanting to be more than just a football guy. For better or for worse he has a voice and he can either chose to use it or not as some people are not able to speak on social justice but one of the worst things you can do is ride the fence which most in his community think he is doing right now.

See above.

Do you really think generalizing white people has a positive influence on the conversation?

Maybe Newton is wiser than you give him credit for.

I was only being sarcastic with that because you refuse to see the other side. It may be more beneficial to his bank account to play the middle (and I can't say that I have any ill feelings about that), but Cam is not being 100% Cam on this issue. He is trying to please two sides. It's also more comfortable for white conservatives for him to not voice his true opinion on the matter. They would be doing whatever they could to get rid of him. These conversations are cool for some whites. But it's funny. Carry on with your day. You can't change my feelings on this, I won't try to change yours.

When you start paying people in excess of $100 million, they become more than just whatever their job title is. They hold influence. They have power to create change that most of us will never have. With all the stress that his position comes with, it also has perks. Some of those perks are being able to make issues that are important to you more important to a wider audience. He earned his platform by earning the amount of social influence he has. Whether or not he decides to use it is entirely up to him.

While I love Cam, I doubt that. I highly doubt that. The fact of the matter is the organization has decided for him that he will stay out of it. He's trying to please his community and his organization. Like I said before more of him will start to come out in these talks. And the white people will be mad again. He can't win for losing. But you guys like it. You guys like him to be quiet on anything that makes whites in general uncomfortable.

By fact of the matter do you actually mean your opinion on the matter?

You're making assumptions about Newton as well as white people without direct knowledge of either.

You're free to do that, but I've pointed out to you how it looks.

Up to you if that's how you wanna go.

Haha thats not the answer they want.  They just want Cam on the bandwagon because his voice would be 100x more powerful than that of the benchwarmer in san francisco.  Smart not to take the bait, unlike them he has a job and smart people around him.

This is basically foolish. At this point, Kap has decidedly more credibility within the black community to speak out on issues of race and racism than Cam, or perhaps any other NFL player as far as that is concerned. Don't get it twisted. Being on the bench in football doesn't equate to being on the bench in life as it pertains to issues of race and racism.

The fact is, recently Kap's jersey was the highest selling one in the NFL. There was also a recent poll which showed that Kap was a favorite in the NFL by blacks, but basically the most disliked by whites.

As to Cam, he hasn't said much, for his own reasons, but he has said enough to let everyone know that he is not happy with the status quo. So all of you people thinking that he is giving his stamp of approval for the way that blacks have been treated in this country have your heads in the sand. That said, many blacks would prefer that he be a "just a football player."

I agree with it all. I'm more angry that this keeps happening and we (not here on the huddle but in general) keep having the same talks about becoming one. I love all people. I treat anyone I come in contact with, with the same respect. I give you exactly what you give to me. I pray for every soul the same.

The issue has spilled into sports because people in the community look to them to be the voice, right or wrong. I don't necessarily hold anyone to do that for me because I have my own voice. What I do not like is when the pot is constantly stirred with them about and once they speak, people are mad. My thing with Cam is that, I want him to speak what's real in his heart. I know he truly wants to bridge the gap. I know he truly sees people for people and nothing else. But I do not want him to feel like he can't want that but say what's on his mind.

Blacks are still treated like animals. I mean just in Tulsa a cop shot a man down because he looked scary after she tased him. The other day I said on here we won't get over the past when it's still happening.

Kumbaya.

True story:

Back in the early 90's I was know as BWD.  "Brotha from the Waist Down"

Listen, I'm not going to go on a rant here... Everyone is the same color when the lights go out. Just sayin.

Oh , and BWD was because I could dance good. Get your mind out of the gutter.

Well Cam is the one that came out with the "I'm a black qb" and the Ali shirt like he was this rebel and then when poo hit the fan he flips the script. That makes him smarter? In what sense? Or does his comments just make you more comfortable because he's the qb on the team you root for?

What... Can saying that he's a black QB, which he is and wearing an Ali shirt makes him a rebel... Really
