Cam Newton Is Just A Football Player

I don't think anyone is pulling Cam's strings, he's always, from even before he was drafted, been very conflicted on how to talk about race. Does no one remember how he kinda threw Mike Vick and Jamarcus Russell under the bus when it came to how people viewed black QBs? Cam hates excuses for failure and has always been loathe to even acknowledge that he has faced any obstacles different than anyone else, even though anyone with half a clue could see all the dog whistles surrounding him in college and pre-draft about his "mental aptitude" and that BS.

Cam just doesn't like dealing with racial issues. That's just the reality of it.

But you guys like it. You guys like him to be quiet on anything that makes whites in general uncomfortable.

You're right. Everyone hated what he said on Wednesday. No white person at all thought he spoke wonderfully on the subject and they were all way too uncomfortable and want him to keep quiet.

@Jeremy Igo, a guy who actually has inside access to the team and has, in fact, actually talked to Cam Newton, has stated that nobody in the Panther organization is controlling what Newton is saying. Head Coach Ron Rivera, himself a minority, has said the same thing.

Again, why should I believe what you suggest over someone who's actually been in contact with the people involved?

LOL, what do you want him to say? So that it could be written up and he's throwing them under the bus. Get real.

Hello pot, meet kettle. One side loves when the black man is silent because it makes them feel better.

You're wrong, and like I said, aren't accomplishing anything with your statements, other than furthering the division already present in this nation.  How do you expect anything positive to ever happen with this attitude?

You know, since Luke Kuechly is white, I have a right to tell him he should think and act like I do on every topic even though he's an individual and we have no common experiences.

I mean, why should he have a right to his own opinions and ideas? He needs to think like a white man should. And if he doesn't, someone must be forcing him not to.

And you haven't answered why I should trust you over Igo (who, ya know, actually knows people directly involved)?

The problem is if white people are uncomfortable with what's being said, it has to be changed or quieted down. It's better for that side of Cam stays silent on what's happening in his own backyard to his own people. Any red blooded black man feels that stress and that fear right now, him included. We won't ever accomplish anything because the white side feels these are just a few bad apples and justify certain thing. While we are over here begging and pleading for the same privilege that you all have.

I think a lot of people specifically fans of the team are tired of hearing Cams name drug through the mud and raked over the coals by ignorant idiots in a football sense so they are allowing that to cloud their judgement on actual important issues because you know as well as I it would be open season on Cam if he stood up and spoke out. That's the burden only he can decide to carry. Although I think you have a portion of the media who would strongly support and stand behind him, but the levels of hatred would reach new heights if he spoke. Having a newborn son and a little girl go take care of I can't blame him for not going all in. I mean this is a guy who has been under a microscope since his sophmore year of college, that has to wear on you no matter How tough you are. I think criticism gets to him more than he lets on. I wouldn't want to be in his position

I dont care what Newton or Rivera or Richardson think. I respect their right to have views but I just dont care. Opinions are just opinions. When they are just going to be used to stir one pot or the other they are useless.

No. If Luke Kuechly doesn't say what I want him to, I have a right to be pissed at him!

Cam is entitled to his own opinion, as are you and me. I can listen to him speak and tell you that he has more of an opinion that what he said. He still held back. Why? To appease both sides. I don't care either way, he addressed the issues on both sides. I know a Cam statement from something that was suggested in a focus group. I've been in focus groups before. He's supposed to give very generic statements.

Anyone with half a brain and knows anything about Cam knows that he will not throw this organization under the bus because just doesn't operate like that.

Sorry, not sorry, if Cam--the big, black face of your team--makes you uncomfortable when he speaks about racial tension. I'm sure you're happy about him playing the middle. Whatever his opinion is, I want it to come from Cam and not Cam plus 5 others.

With all due respect to Igo, I'm going with the guy who made his living covering the team.

Race has played a role in some, if not most, of the criticism Newton has received over the years. He said it in January and he said it again to the nation’s most recognizable black publication. But since then, something has changed, and Newton has been operating under the politics of respectability and colorblindness.

Part of the shift has to do with GOP pollster and PR advisor Frank Luntz. Luntz has worked with the Panthers before—Deadspin outlined some of his work with them and Cam Newton in a piece from 2014, which included, as the article says, “a campaign to enhance the image of several players and the organization.” He was called in (by whom is unclear) this off-season to help Newton frame discussions on race among other topics, according to sources close to Newton. (Newton’s camp denies this.) Luntz, who declined comment on this story through a spokeswoman, is often credited with prompting the phrase “climate change” rather than global warming and helping Newt Gingrich with his 1990s “Contract With America.”

What I find irritating is that you view Cam as being shoved into a corner, afraid to speak his "true" mind because it doesn't align with what you feel he should be saying, while I believe based on many, many other instances when he has talked about race that he is overly guarded against ever allowing racism to be a hindrance to how he views the world. You are portraying him as weak and eager-to-please rather than accepting he adamantly wants people to be united and accountable. I think he's being true to himself and the way that he wants to discuss things, and if he chooses to become more outspoken against racial prejudice that it would not be a "change of heart" but just him being more forceful with his words. But as much as it may irritate all the blacks who call him an "Uncle Tom" and such, Cam's temperament is to try and bridge gaps and be very conciliatory, and that's just who he is. It's not the team or the pollster or Mr. Richardson, it's just Cam, creator of kid's shows and wearer of silly hats and fun-lover extraordinaire, and that he chooses to be overly positive rather than critical, even sometimes to a fault.
