Offensive Line of the Week

TheSpecialJuan mentioned and linked article this in a thread Tuesday night  but I thought it deserved a thread of it's own.  If the OL can continue this work it will be a huge step for this team.  Even in the Denver game I saw some outstanding OL play.  Unfortunately it was interspersed with breakdowns and superior DL play.   Minnesota will present it's own set of challenges as it is another top defense.

The Panthers were well-rested, with nine days between the NFL season opener and Sunday's bout with San Francisco, and keeping quarterback Cam Newton clean was a major priority after all the big hits he took vs. Denver in Week 1. Well, mission accomplished. The Panthers' pass protection held up well against a 49ers defense that pitched a shutout in Week 1 vs. the Rams (sacking Case Keenumtwice). Heading into Monday, the Panthers had the second-best pass-blocking unit of the week (behind Washington), according to Pro Football Focus, with just six hurries, zero QB hits and zero sacks attributed to the offensive line. Newton was sacked once in the game, but it came on a scramble and wasn't attributed to the O-line. Newton completed 24 of 40 passes for 353 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in the Panthers' home opener.

The Panthers lead the league in rushing yards per game (166.5) through Week 2 in part because of their huge performance Sunday, when the team racked up 37 carries for 176 yards. Newton, one of the game's best dual-threat quarterbacks, had six carries for 37 yards -- five were designed run plays.

Please stop with this worry over the Vikes front 7. They do do well against the run, but they have trouble getting to the QB without blitzing. And we all know how much Cam loves him those blitzes. They try to box the QB in the pocket, then collapse it around him. Not a bad scheme against a QB that does not scare you. Cam...he scares you. Even if the running game takes a step back, we should be able to move the ball against them.

If we can continue the trend of limiting the running game, then Bradford will have to beat us. He may get them some points, but their talent level is just not high enough to keep up with us. Without the threat of the running game, we can spend the game going after Bradford. Even as tough as he is, by the 4th quarter, he will be seeing ghosts.

They are a good team. However, we are a very good team, and we are at home. IF we do not help them with turnovers, and penalties, they will have a very difficult time beating us.

I think our starting 5 together works great. You notice a big difference when one of them goes out..

As long as we are running a offense and not just calling plays it looks really good the way Cam has time and space in the pocket.

Although I do agree with 2 of your points, I do take umbrage to 1 of them. Don't let folks convince you our O-line depth is not up to snuff. When Trai went down, Williams stepped right in. (Although he seems to be slotted in at reserve Guard, and not the tackle we drafted him to be. Cuz, when Remmers went down, it was Hawkins that subbed in for him, not Williams. And I have to wonder what that means for Scott?)

No, we don't have the best line in football. No, we don't have the best line depth in football. But you know what. As a group, right now, they are more than capable of getting us where we want to go. And I, along with a multitude of others, of which Mr. Scott is one, are grateful for the talent we do have.

Scott didn't make the roster.  I think he was injured?  I forget why he was cut.

Our backup Oline guys on the 53 are:

Gino Gradkowski  (C)

Daryl Williams  (T / G)

Tyler Larsen (G)

and Donald Hawkins (T)

There is one O lineman on the PS:  David Yankey

Scott is suspended for violating the drug policy. I think he is still on the roster I remember something about him being back week 4.

Ah thanks.  It's hard to believe I'd already forgotten all about that 4 week suspension for Scott.  He's on the reserve / suspended list.  Wow.  Roster cuts and all the hype about who'd make the 53 seem like ancient history, but were really only 3 weeks ago.

I think it was that Denver game and all the emotion following it because of the awful hits to Cam's head...  (Well and also because the game vs San Fran was long enough for about 3 games....!) but for whatever reason, I feel like the season started many weeks ago!  Feels like it should already be week 6 or something.

In any case, it's going to be interesting to see what happens when Scott's suspension is over.  I'd guess he'd be on the 53 and that Larsen would land on the PS.

    • Same... With the personnel the Niners had, that defense could have been historically good in the right hands. Under Wilks they were certainly good, they didn't quite rise to that level. Honestly, I see Wilks kinda like I see Rivera: fantastic person, decent head coach. Skill wise, phenomenal DB coach, so-so DC. His greatest strength is his leadership. Hard to find many better in that department. In the Xs and Os / execution area though, not as good. Bottom Line: Wilks is the sort of coach that needs a staff that excels in those aspects of the game where he's weaker. But, like Rivera, I don't know that he scouts assistants very well. That as much as anything might be why he's not in the NFL now.
    • Clearly the best outcome for us is a Giants W. A spot or two difference in the 4th round is inconsequential. Just look at the trade value charts. A spot or two at the top of the 1st means a LOT. A spot or two in the mid-rounds? Virtually nothing.
    • Agree. I don't think I have ever heard him say anything positive, at any time, about the Panthers. Best expectation is no mention at all.
