An article written by our boy - JJones.. he does a good job.. I'd imagine he wouldn't have been able to write this for the Observer and when he went to SI - he knew he had this piece waiting to be published

Seems to me that they should just let Cam speak his mind.. he isn't going to say anything that destroys his image.. he might say something 'real' from time to time that might rub some people the wrong way, but nothing to hurt the Panther's BRAND.. just leave the Republican speech therapist out of it please.. it is a bad look, IMO

As bad a look as it seems, pissing off millions is a worse look. You can call it string pulling, but I call it a favor that's in his best interest. He can say/do whatever he wants when he's backing up Blaine Gabbert. Until then, he needs PR people.

Most people who work for a living, in any kind of even remotely high profile position for a company, aren't allowed to behave in a manner that makes that company uncomfortable.  Don't know why football players should be the exception to the rule.  If the Panthers don't have a problem with what he says then fine but if they tell him to tone it down then that what needs to happen.  Welcome to the real world of working folks OP.

Don't tell the millennials that. They want to be able to tell there boss to go fug themselves without repercussions.

As a manager, I sure as hell coach my employees on being politically correct when in the public eye.  Why should a football team, as an employer, be any different?  If this is truly going on, I have no problem with it.  This team doesn't need the distractions that come along with a few words that the media will blow out of proportion.

In this incredibly nuanced country, where butthurt lurks in just about everyone's heart, it's probably smart if you are a public figure to sit down and talk with a professional communication expert to figure out the best way to discuss issues without offending large swaths of the population.

A figure that is looming as large as Cam is on the national stage can either solidify himself as an athlete and an icon, or can go down in flames like Kaepernick is doing at the moment.

A better example would be Joe Namath, who was probably the Cam Newton of his day. Kids looked up to him, women flocked to him, guys wanted to be like Broadway Joe. He was a marketing dream and would push just about any product you asked him to, even pantyhose (yep, wore them in the ad and everything). He guest starred on every TV show on the networks and was at premiere events worldwide. Then it just took a few incidents and the public recognition of his alcoholism and he faded from the scene. They trot him back out every now and then, but he usually just makes an ass of himself somehow and when sober, he's pretty bitter about how the public turned on him. In his opinion, he was just having a little fun.

In today's media-centric, celebrity obsessed climate, a guy like Cam always has a microphone in his face and a camera watching him. They'll take every uplifting soundbite he can give them and shout his praises, but one mis-spoken statement and they'll be like a pack of hyenas on a wounded gazelle.

He's one hell of a QB and we don't begrudge him the work of a QB coach at practice. He's becoming a role model and voice on the national scene, we shouldn't begrudge him seeking a coach there as well.

For those complaining that we need to get the conversation back to football, this is a huge and current NFL talking point.  A thread or two dedicated to how it does or does not affect the Panthers is very much a part of this board.  Especially on a Tuesday!

If and when someone goes off the rails please use the report feature, I'm sure it will happen eventually with this much passion about a subject.  But talking about it never hurt anything.  It is also very easy to ignore completely by never clicking into a thread who's title gives clear warning about the topic.

I can't imagine why Cam would want to avoid controversial topics. I mean look at how calm, mature and reasonable the discussions in this forum have been.

Who wouldn't want this kind of debate in their locker room or their media, right?

why is there a debate at all? We are a team. Our fans come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. You know what is important. The deafening noise in the stadium carries the same tune no matter who is hollering.

For anybody that wants to have a long discussion about politics or religion or whatever, there's a whole Tinderbox forum dedicated to that.

What forum should the people who only want to talk about Panthers football go to?

Dude, I can somewhat understand where your coming from on this.

But you're entering actual football threads complaining about the social discussion threads. Ease up a bit, it's going to be a trending discussion whether you like it or not.

I just don't get this logic.  If you don't want to discuss the role of politics in football that is literally all over every sports and national media right now, do NOT click a topic that says, "Panthers pulling puppet strings on Cam when it comes to political issues??"

It is very easy on this board to keep your head in the sand and believe these issues are not affecting the NFL by simply following that common sense approach.  And you want it easier?

This IS Panthers related.
