An article written by our boy - JJones.. he does a good job.. I'd imagine he wouldn't have been able to write this for the Observer and when he went to SI - he knew he had this piece waiting to be published

Eight months ago, when Newton said he was an “African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people,” he may have shunned a certain demographic. Now he’s endeared them. They say his recent rhetoric on race is doing more to unite us than others. But by saying in an interview to GQ in August that we, as a nation, are beyond racism, and further questioning (confusingly) how one-eighth of an inch of skin can cause so much disharmony, Newton has drawn great backlash from the black community. The criticisms have ranged from fair deconstruction of his comments to some of the ugliest things black people can say to one another.

Part of the shift has to do with GOP pollster and PR advisor Frank Luntz. Luntz has worked with the Panthers before—Deadspin outlined some of his work with them and Cam Newton in a piece from 2014, which included, as the article says, “a campaign to enhance the image of several players and the organization.” He was called in (by whom is unclear) this off-season to help Newton frame discussions on race among other topics, according to people close to Newton. Luntz, who declined comment on this story through a spokeswoman, is often credited with prompting the phrase “climate change” rather than global warming and helping Newt Gingrich with his 1990s “Contract With America.”

Seems to me that they should just let Cam speak his mind.. he isn't going to say anything that destroys his image.. he might say something 'real' from time to time that might rub some people the wrong way, but nothing to hurt the Panther's BRAND.. just leave the Republican speech therapist out of it please.. it is a bad look, IMO

Most people who work for a living, in any kind of even remotely high profile position for a company, aren't allowed to behave in a manner that makes that company uncomfortable.  Don't know why football players should be the exception to the rule.  If the Panthers don't have a problem with what he says then fine but if they tell him to tone it down then that what needs to happen.  Welcome to the real world of working folks OP.

You win the internet this morning.. Great Job!

In response, if the Panthers have a problem with him talking his mind and want to pull him aside - fine.. but to go as far as hiring Luntz.. just seems like a bit much..

Yes they are. What Cam said in January is what Cam meant. Maybe it was with good intentions they brought someone in to curb those questions to keep it from becoming a season long distraction and they failed miserably. But I get it; this is Cam's job and I think he tried to stay neutral since he doesn't speak on race anyway.

i just wish people in the public, media, wherever would stop trying to make everything a scandal that people are to take sides on and argue to death. Scandals are easy for the media as they dont require thoughtful genuine journalism but they serve to do nothing positive.
