Adjustment going forward- Funch should start with Ted Ginn at 3

Every time Ginn is on the field whether he is going to catch it or not, you have to know where he is , and be ready to help over the top.  Lots of Ginn plays opened up the middle and the seams for everyone else.   He is still brings a dimension that KB and Funchess don't.  If he got his foot in on the touchdown that was called back, Ginn would have had 100+ yards and a touchdown.  Ginn is the #2.

With Ginn you have to take the good with the bad. He offers a dynamic that no other WR we have active can match. His pure speed creates space for Benjamin and Greg to work underneath. He backs off the safety pressure every play and softens up the middle of the field because the secondary has to assume he's going to the endzone every route.

It's a common mistake to think that if a player doesn't put any statistics in the column that they didn't contribute. It's not always the case.

i like funchess, but from what i gather he's more of a possession receiver thus far.  very situational.  not sure what you could take away from yesterday that would make you think that differently.  ginn, for all the hate i give him for hands of stone, puts a lot of pressure on defenses by simply being out there.  funch, not so much, unless we are 3rd and long or red zone.

I love FunFun as much as the next guy. But this is really about Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olsen more than it is about Devin Funchess vs Ted Ginn.

Ted spreads the defense out at the start of the play. This also helps out the running game. Like @Jeremy Igo said, the whole "Starting" thing really isn't a big deal. Its about the gameplan. Kelvin Benjamin has just been a matchup NIGHTMARE for opposing Defenses. I've seen a couple of interesting sets where Funchess was lined up as the 2nd TE and I thought that was interesting. Devin will be fine... its really just about matchups.

Then there's this too...

nfl lists Funchess as the starter and he had the most snaps of any receiver. Did the panthers stop providing the pff game books or is there another way to confirm if Funchess did or did not start?

an important thing to remember is that 1,2, and 3 are only fantasy designations. x,y, and z are receiver positions and they have different roles and  line up differently.

Philly is a better slot reciever ans a better route runner and is better in the short passing game.

Can't agree with this anymore.  Ginn can run every route now, and run them well.  Not many people give him that credit, but he's a much different receiver since his first stint here in 2013.

    • I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in. Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are: 1) Jaycee Horn 2) Mike Jackson 3) Chau Smith-Wade 4) Shemar Bartholomew  5) Akayleb Evans   Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level. Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.  Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs. Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment. Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year. There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53. And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.
    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
