If Cam has the ball tucked and is beyond the line of scrimmage then hits to the head or knees are actually completely legal.

I could be wrong, but this is the Wiki related to helmet-to-helmet hits:

  • Helmet-to-helmet hits are banned in the NFL, with a penalty of 15 yards for violations. In 2010, the NFL placed its policies pertaining to these incidents under review, considering heavy fines and suspensions.[3] In addition to prohibiting these hits during actual play, the NFL does not allow the sale of these hits on its site in hopes of reducing them.

I'm of the understanding that it's a penalty to hit anyone helmet-to-helmet regardless of their position or what they happen to be doing at that time.

Yeah I know. but I thought all this stuff was just assumed to be behind the line of scrimmage since that was the problem with denvers hits.  Helmet to helmet is illegal regardless, I think

To be fair, to the point he's making, he's right. You can't run power runs and QB draws and read options and love that it's a part of what makes Cam special but then complain that he's compared to running backs.

If you want to blame someone, blame the staff for using him like one.

Missing the point

the point is when he plays a down as a pure passer he doesn't get the protection and game influencing protection all QBs get.

The fact he is special in other ways shouldn't void that.  The fact he is tougher to tackle and bring down in the pocket when passing shouldn't void it either.

I completely understand that point. But that's not what Kelly was talking about.

I was more talking about the stop comparing him to a running back thing, when he does a lot of running back stuff lol. You can acknowledge that fact and still want Cam to be protected when he is throwing.

Just passers and defenseless receivers really with a couple other situations as well(punt returner, some blocking situations). Imagine there being a flag every time a linebacker makes helmet to helmet contact with a running back who lowered his head running through a tight hole in the line. You're talking 10-15 per game at least. It's simply not feasible to remove or penalize helmet to helmet hits on established runners who have the ball without drastically changing the game and once Cam tucks the ball he is considered to be no different than Tolbert as far as the rules go(unless he slides which he never does)

I don't like how they keep comparing him to running backs. It's annoying.

HE'S A QUARTERBACK!!!

Exactly, way too much of this. All its doing is giving these players trying to take helmet shots at Cam even more justification to keep doing it.

He's an NFL player. Call him whatever position you want but the fact is he runs a lot and he throws a lot. He excels at both. Comparing his rushing ability to Eddie George's is completely valid and acceptable.
