Shula Speaks

I feel like I'm the only one who liked the play-calling in the Denver game.  There is only so much you can do against that defense.  The only play call I really hated was the shovel pass to Tolbert on 3rd down.

I've seen some people complain about Newton running on the last drive but didn't both runs lead to like 10 yard gains?  We were in field goal position despite horrible management of our timeouts.  Can't blame Shula that the Broncos have 2 HOF Pass Rushers who knew we were passing and thus could tee off on Cam.  That is why we had to throw in a couple of QB draws to do something to slow them down.

I think we will be more aggressive this week against the 49ers.

That shovel pass would have worked if Tolbert would have used the 2 blocking O-lineman.  Instead he tried to turn it directly up inside and got smacked.  If he'd have went outside he would likely have had a first down.

We went 15-1 last season and Shula did a good job, that said teams have tape on what we do.  Lots of it.  Just like in any business if you aren't improving your getting worse.

Add more quick hitting running plays.  The read option is so slow to develop that teams are figuring out ways to slow it down regardless of what the DE does.  I would be nice to see more of the standard running play up the gut.   There was a time when play action was an art.  Some QBs were outstanding at making the ball disappear.  Peyton Manning in his youth was one of the last really good ones at it.   Read Option and our lame play action doesn't fool many.

Most 100 yds per game since 1978.  Amazing but also skewed as those other teams didn't rely heavily on their QB to pick-up 30 or 40 yds per game.

I believe we will once again have the highest scoring team in the NFL and Shula will have a say in that but doesn't mean he's beyond criticism.   There are things he can do to improve this offense even more.

With our personnel, we should be scoring 30-40 points a game. No excuses.

You can't point out a handful of plays where our players didn't execute this past week on offense. They executed. The play calling, especially in the second half, was suspect at best, and that is on Shula.

I agree, but I don't think you can expect Tolbert to make that play.  He sucks.

Slants are hard to pull off with as many defenders in the box as we typically face.

And screens don't really play into Cam's strengths since he sometimes has trouble with those kinds of passes.  Hell he had a pass last game to a wide open receiver (I think it was Funchess) in the flat that looked like a bubble screen but he threw in the dirt.

I really just want to see some kind, any kind, of quick throws. Doesn't have to be a slant. I haven't looked at the All-22, but as innovative as the Carolina offense is I would think they could draw up plays with quick strikes to offset a devastating pass rush.

They scored 31 points per game last season, and by all accounts field a better offense this season so...

No offense in NFL history has scored 30-40 points every game.  Expecting the Panthers to do that is ridiculous.

And if he just meant averages, then I don't know what his point is supposed to be.  Its only been one game.  And we did much better against Denver's D last year.  I don't know what some of you expect.  Denver's D shuts down just about everyone but Pittsburgh, who are loaded on offense.
