Ah, virtue signaling. You know full well you wouldn't give the tip, you just want the moral superiority.

If you're comfortable giving 20% for that service, you must regularly be giving 40% for excellent service. Or do you not actually reward people who provide great service?

I think I already said I give a minimum of 15%. It is usually around 18-25% depending on the numbers and the level of service. Notice I said level not quality, because I am not a judge of quality of service. But, I have tipped 35-40% for really good service.

I honestly just don't go out to eat that much. When I do, I usually have a coupon or something, and I still tip at the rate of the pre-coupon cost.

But there are often variables at play that negate their ability to provide service by each person's standards...

People should be able to make rent payments, and earn a living wage, in the service industry. You don't know why these people ended up here, nor the things in their lives that have contributed to this level of employment.

Therefore, you should do the right, human, thing and have a little empathy towards your fellow man.

How much excess do you have in your personal lives that you can't put a little aside and pay for someone to wait on you, even if you don't consider their services to be up to par?

It's not MY job to help pay your rent. It's YOUR job. You want a proper tip? Give me proper service and I'll give you that proper tip. Treat the job like crap, I'll tip you like crap. Do your job. It's as easy as that. You do it, and I'll do my "job" and tip well. I'm sorry you've been a server, Bronn, but it's pretty easy to understand it all. Chairty is meant for those who truly need it. Some kid working for tips to put new rims on his car? Nope. You get no empathy for me after you forgot to bring me bread, never checked on my table, and never smiled.

Because blood for life-saving surgery and money for terrible service are the same thing to Bronn.

You don't know every server's situation. For them, you non-payment of $5 extra dollars could be the difference in a hot, healthy meal for them or their kids and having just enough to pay their water bill or not get evicted.

Stop acting like you're the authority on people's burdens.

I think the system is stupid, but I'm a good little society member and always tip 20%.

However, I'm not sure why people who want good service are now being accused of having "outrageous demands" or being condescending elitists. Isn't bringing refills, bringing the food out warm, having the order right and being at least civil just a part of the server's job?  I don't think it's outrageous to expect someone to be competent at their job.

My clients expect me to provide good service too.  It's what they are paying me for.   I don't think they're being outrageous for expecting it.

I've already said I've never been a server. Nice try though.

Keep being a cheapwad because someone doesn't bring you bread, check on you, or didn't smile at you.

Read that and think about how that makes you look.

Servers aren't asking for charity. They are asking you to treat them like humans, not slaves.

You terrible tipper! My parents taught me 20% is the base standard. How dare you rob the waiter of money!

See the problem here with judging tipping habits of others?

Do your clients pay you less than a third of minimum wage, pending their own approval of your service?

I went to Burger King once, in high school, and used a 25 cent coupon I had... The woman taking my order said "wow you saved a whole quarter"...

I proceeded to sit down, eat my meal, and leave "fug BK" scrawled on the table in about 15 packs worth of ketchup upon my departure...

It was a totally shitty thing to do, and the girl that pissed me off probably didn't even have to clean it up...

But, I still consider that a less shitty thing to do than to not tip at least 15% on the worst service you've ever had in your life... Because that lady at Burger King was paid (and/or whoever had to clean up my mess,) back then, probably double what most servers are today...

Restaurants exploit their servers by paying them poor wages, and you're doing nothing about it by your petty non-tips...

I'd much rather you cause a scene, flip a table, or do something to demonstrate your displeasure other than passive-aggressively shorting someone who's had to resort to a lower tier job/wage for whatever reasons in their lives.

I love how you insinuate anybody who doesn't leave a lip, is being petty.

Go be judgemental somewhere else.

I tip way above average. And if i get to the point where I decide I'm not tipping, then the waiter/waitress is getting exactly what they deserve.

Cry a river somewhere else.

If someone needs the $5 that badly they probably would go out of their way to provide amazing service. Perhaps if they want a good tip, they might ask for a refill every now and then (waiting 101 right there). Anyone with a brain would do that.

Again - 99% of the time service is worthy of a good tip. In this case? It isn't. Plain and simple.

15% of $128 would have been $19.20. You're defending the values of someone who paid $.75

20% of $128 would have been $25.60. If my bill would have been $128, I would have had at least 3 other people with me, and I would have asked everyone to leave at least $6. I'd probably leave $10 myself, as serving 4 people a meal at an average of $32 a piece is probably some heavy attention.

Nice try though.

On average even in the worst tipped areas waiters make an extra $7 an hour in tips. That's over minimum wage in many states. (http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/02/how-much-do-waiters-really-earn-in-tips/385515/)

Heck, my math professor flat out told all of us in class to become waiters. He made $15 an hour on average (including tips) in college working at a bar.

You keep saying that, but it's not entirely true.  Yes, servers do make $2.13 an hour.  But if they don't receive enough tips to reach minimum wage, then the employer is required, by law, to bring them up to the minimum wage level.

Almost everybody is judged by subjective standards when it comes to job performance.  Servers aren't alone in that.
