omfg I'm dying with the mental images of some of you fuggers getting all heated and smarmy and talking down to servers who to you, in your infinite superiority, don't meet your standards of service.

If you're going to be a cheap asshole then just stay your fat, lazy, ass at home and raid the frozen burritos, waddle yourself into the kitchen and actually burn some calories preparing a meal,  or hit you up a good double fisting's worth of Big Macs and fries through the drive-thru.

As a former server I gotta say I'm on D's side in this. Waiting tables is sales. You're basically selling yourself, your service. Your tip is your commission. If you do a shitty job selling you get a shitty commission. A customer is not obligated to tip just because, nor does it matter one bit if that customer is rich or poor. Tips are to be EARNED.

Now, because I've been in their shoes I tend to be a little more understanding. If it's busy and the waitress can't stop to check refills I'll over look it. If overall service is slow i understand it's not necessarily the server' fault.

But if my food is wrong and you decide to just pick the ingredients out rather than correct it we are gonna have an issue. I would never serve that to my table. I would not have tipped, either, based on his experience.

It's not the law to not be an asshole either...

I've never had to stoop to the level of working in the service industry... but if I did, I would go Liam Neeson's character in Taken against bad tippers...

That's the thing though... We don't know who this server's boss is, or how busy it was, etc. Let's hear their story before we rush to defend this guy with a track record of pettiness...

2. Lots of you guys are sounding ignorant at best, assholes at worst. Unless someone straight up cusses you out or spits in your food, you ALWAYS tip at least 10% no matter how bad the service. These people make basically nothing as their base salary and rely on you for tips. Don't think that's fair? Then don't eat out or eat at McDonald's.

That falls into the everybody is a winner and all the kids gets a trophy mentality.

It's that mentality that forces us assholes to be assholes.  You know why?  Because you reward even horrible service with a tip that doesn't do anything.  P55's  lower tip with suggestion on napkin is nice, but no tip is immediate feedback and I don't have to waste my time writing it down.

I have worked off tips before, and it was really good when kitchen was moving fast,  and worse when the kitchen was slower, but it was never an issue about level of service from me.  Usually as long as you were friendly, set expectation, and attentive the tips were good to great.  Add in a joke or 2, pay attention to the little kids, and make sure glasses were filled then tips got really good (mostly).

I rather be the asshole with my tip money than the sucker who paid for bad service.

I don't think anyone on here will debate on whether DWill is an douche.  I just think it's more inline of you aren't forced to tip if you think you have gotten poor service no matter what your income level is.  Rewarding poor service is bad and basically perpetuates more bad service.

Unless they are rude, have a bad attitude or I feel like they're intentionally screwing me, I usually leave a little something ...

I'm low maintenance. Just bring my food in time and get the order right. You don't need to kiss my a$$ .... If I need something, I will flag you. I knew people that worked as servers and they really don't make a lot of money

would pie this twice if I could...

Most of the people here agreeing with DWill probably generally tip around 10-15% for even great service.

I never tip under 20% unless the service is very poor. So that's not true in my case. I've tipped 5-10 bucks on a drink before just because. Bad service doesn't deserve that courtesy in my opinion. Sorry.

America's tipping system is broken.  It shouldn't be the customer's obligation to make sure the server is earning minimum wage. It's the employer's responsibility.

This is true... but until they fix the system, it is up to us as respectable humans to make up the difference...

leaving 75¢ is an equally lame thing to do.

If you think the service was bad, sincerely bad, just don't leave anything at all.

No need to be a baby about it.

If you leave no tip at all people will just say you forgot or that you never tip because you're an asshole(or even worse reasons).

By leaving a small tip it's a clear signal.
