Should the Panthers defense respond in kind to teams that target Cam?

Absolutely not. I know a lot of football fans like to talk all this fake macho bull$h1t about how this is a man's game. But I can't imagine how a person can claim to love football and also support injuring players. I want the best players on earth playing to the best of their abilities, as hard as they can for 60 minutes. I want two healthy teams going at it at full strength because I love football and I want to see it played well and played hard.

One of the saddest parts about this is that Cam is the only thing keeping me watching the NFL. That league is a disgrace. Cam is a once in a lifetime talent that reminds people that sports are supposed to be fun and that there is value in doing something hard, sometimes painful, and finding joy in it. Last night the NFL shat all over that. The real reason Cam isn't allowed to be the face of the NFL is he's too good. He's not cynical enough for them. He hasn't been corrupted. We are lucky that we have leaders on defense like Thomas Davis who are the same way.

So no, our defense should not respond in kind. I don't want to beat our opponents only when we play our best. I want to beat our opponents when they play their best.

There is one last thing and then I'll shut up: I'm not from Carolina. They're not my home team. I chose them because when I was 11 I saw Steve Smith play and remind me why I play sports and take joy in competition and for the next fifteen years I can say that I am proud of the organization that I root for.  And I want to keep feeling good about rooting for this team. Yes, I want them to do well. But I also want them to do good.

Obviously the refs aren't going to make calls for roughing the passer on Cam.  The more I think about it, the more emotional I get about the whole situation.  I think the Panthers defense should make a statement.  If opposing defenses make runs at Cam with no abandon, our defense should say "bump that" and take it to their QB.  Who cares if we get flags called on us, it's about making sure the other team know we aren't taking this bull anymore.

Um no, they would have called a headshot and flagged us for hitting their QB

As much as them retaliating would make me feel better, it's not the right thing to do, so no. I don't want anybody on the ground like Cam was after that last hit. I just remember saying a little prayer and saying please get up Cam, afterwards. I also understand why you feel the way you do, OP.

Now, what I would have liked to have seen: I would have liked to have seen the OL and WR go after the Den def after that hit, but that's the firecracker in me. It's probably best they didn't, because they'd be suspended against the 49ers.

I hate hate hate seeing guys get hurt.

But i want another shot at Denver really really bad and would love to see Tolbert go Low at the knees Low at Miller and Marshall on the blitz.

Then us win the NFL threatens to fine him and Tolbert gives them a bug F U and retires

You are a fan of a violent game in a billion dollar business. There is no moral high ground for a team. It is about wins, market, and money. The officials are responsible for setting the level of morality in a game. It is the responsibility of the players to their team to play on the edge of those set limits in order to achieve a victory and the coaches to direct them in those limits. A player can not choose their standard of morality in the middle of a game.

That decision belongs to the players when they can decide to not play for a team or coach due to the coaches standards in a game. Unfortunately, money typically trumps most peoples' morality.

That decision belongs to the fans deciding on the products they are putting their money and time into that fuels this amoral machine. The market will determine the limits of morality. Show me a fan, athlete, or employee that is willing to blow the whistle on their own team for dirty play? Until you can convince fans and athletes to out their own team for the disgusting product they are putting on the field, then there is no high ground for this movement. Seems fans will jump all over the morality of their team off the field in a second, but they will not hold their team accountable for their actions on the field.
