We're all clueless when it comes to roughing the passer

Ladies and gentlemen,

After some light reading of the huddle it is painfully clear that a majority of us don't understand what roughing the passer is.  Here are some gifs to illustrate what is and isn't roughing the passer.

Roughing

Wrap and tackle to the thighs = roughing

Hand heavily brushing the facemask = roughing

Vicious tackle on Romo = Roughing

Tackle around the knees = roughing

Helmet in the chest.  That's roughing

Obviously this is roughing but who doesn't love watching this one on repeat.

Don't watch the next two at work.  Brutal and graphic attempted decapitations of Orton and Romo.  I'm not afraid to admit to averting my eyes from such violence.

Not roughing

One of these four qualifies as roughing.  It's pretty obvious which one it is.  The rest are just love taps.  Hope that helps!

I agree. Refs blew a lottt of calls last night, but on a side note... As long as we treat Cam like a running back, so will the refs. Unfortunately, we can't expect protection by refs when our own coaches don't look out for him. I love what Cam does for the team, but we feed him to the lions and expose him to hits way too often.

Well maybe we need some intelligent refs who can understand the difference between a fuging running play and god damn passing play.

You left out the time Hardy hit Palmer in the back too hard without first sending him a greeting card and giving him a call to tell him he was coming.  That was roughing too.

Regardless, excellent work lol.  I'm glad we can know how to approach opposing QBs going forward.

I mean, shame on us for not responding in kind.  At the end of the day, regardless of rules, if a kid is trying to take your lunch money, you fight him.  If that's what you have to do, then do it.  Play the game the refs are allowing at that point in time.  Force them to make calls.  We sat idly by and got punched in the mouth.  This is professional football, and when guys jobs are on the line, you do what you have to do.  I'm sick to my stomach over the hits Cam took last night, and it all went undisciplined, whether by the refs, our players, or NFL execs.

Well, honestly, spearing is illegal regardless of the person carrying the ball...so step one is making sure the NFL begins to enforce the rules that are currently on the books.

And not that this makes any difference but with short qbs like Brees it's so easy to make contact with their head that a lot of time it's accidental, Cam on the other hand is so tall you have to intentionally try to do it and still nothing gets called. I'm sure the league will hand out some token fines at some point but it won't stop other teams from watching this game and seeing what they can get away with. This was opening night on national TV and they let cam get killed, I don't want to see what a terrible team like the 9ers in a game no one will watch can get away with.

What I don't get is how the refs can call an intentional grounding while also throwing a flag for a shot to the head/personal foul.

When a QB gets hit while simultaneously throwing a ball and the ball doesn't get back to the original line of scrimmage or in the area of a receiver, it is deemed incomplete.

Why shouldn't the same apply when you are throwing and getting speared in the head with a helmet???
