Willie M on no calls last night

Here's an article discussing the missed calls. I agree with the author on all accounts except he said it didn't make a difference in the outcome.

Thanks for the link.  Good article.

CBS is really on this.  Here's another article they've got up today on this:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/panthers-broncos-ii-is-great-but-cam-newtons-head-deserves-better/

Quote

DENVER -- The football game that kicked off the 2016 NFL season was exceptional. But it was the head-to-head shots Cam Newton took, and what it says about the difficult balancing act between safety and competition, that turned the night into a failure.

For fans.

For the Panthers and their star quarterback.

And for a game we all love -- and a money-making machine the league must find a way to protect from the very thing that makes it so compelling in the first place: that searing violence that, this time, unleashed itself on the league's reigning MVP.

Time and again, Newton took helmet-to-helmet shots. There were certainly four, including a huge shot at the end of the game that left him down, dazed and confused. Was that illegal hit -- one offset by an accompanying intentional grounding call with just 37 seconds left in a one-point game -- part of the reason Denver won a 21-20 thriller?

Perhaps. Perhaps not. From then on Newton seemed off in what could have been a winning drive, but it could just as well have been the same swarming Broncos defense that last season made them champions. And Carolina still had a chance to win. Graham Gano missed a 50-yard field goal that would have been the winner, and that was it, the Broncos swamping their home turf, celebrating at Carolina's expense yet again.

Melded in all that excitement was another incredible performance by Newton, a night of ugly stats but quiet promise from Broncos novice and starting quarterback Trevor Siemian, and another reminder that John Elway might be as good in the front office as he was the huddle.

But it all got overshadowed by the same ugliness that, more and more often, foists itself on everyone invested in the game of football -- the league, the fans, the players, the officials, you, me.

There is a new concussion protocol in place, but if I told you I understood it after watching Newton stay in that game I would be lying or delusional. As I expect almost anyone would be, the league and its officiating crew included.

Time and again, Newton took shots to his helmet that were not called. When that flag finally did fly as the game ground down to its final, crucial moments, the offsetting policy mocked the earlier moments. It was as if to say: Even when we protect you, Cam, we don't care enough to make it matter.

THEY DON'T CARE.

If Willie keeps questioning his employer, they'll fire his ass and bring in another talking head.  The NFL machine doesn't give a poo about anyone.  These guys are nothing more than means to an end and the NFL will chew them up and spit them out and move onto the next one.

If you had any thought to the contrary, just go rewatch the refs doing nothing, standing just feet away from our QB being physically assaulted with a deadly weapon in repeated attempts to knock him unconscious.

Ron Jaworski on Mike and Mike this morning basically said bc Cam runs out of the pocket a lot he should expect it.

What??!!???!!

As long as the QB is behind the line of scrimmage he still has the ability to pass...God forbid if that was Brady, Rodgers, et al...those Broncos might have been suspended for the year.

Never cared for Jaworski much. He doesn't try to hide his bias.

Listen, Rivera knows what's up. He alluded to that in that Albert Breer interview. He's stood up for Cam before, but he has to be even more vocal in his support now. I know it makes him, and the organization uncomfortable, but they owe it to Cam to say something. The organization has made Cam very rich, but he's reciprocated that for the Panthers. Without Cam, this franchise is the mediocre team that used to win once every few years. Also, if this continues, Cam is going to get seriously hurt. Rivera is a great human being, and I know he doesn't want that on his conscious. Cam's not going to say nothing, so Rivera has to speak for him.

I'm wondering if Cam needs to start throwing the ball out of bounds half a second earlier than he thinks he needs to sometimes.  He hasnt gotten protected for 6 years, so i dont know how much longer we can wait for the refs to do something.

^this has nothing to do with the head shots.. those were disgusting and shouldnt happen either way.

Ron is a minority and last night he failed Cam too.  He needs to call out the NFL and admit he failed with them.

And it ain't just black QBs.  Opponents could get away junk with The Golden Calf of Bristol too. The Golden Calf of Bristol simply was the last true white physical speciman that has lined up a QB

Ron definitely needs to get angry and just take the fine. The great coaches wouldn't stand by and let their QB take a beating like that and not blast the refs publicly afterwards.

You guys are way too biased to be objective about this. " Think back on the hits on Newton. At least three came when he was running, being pulled toward the ground, trying to fight for more yardage with his head up and a defender tasked with finishing off the tackle inadvertently hit his head. " We are talking about possibly 2 missed calls, while the Panthers players were blatantly holding Denver's pass rushers all night long. Also, the notion that the NFL goes out of its way to hold back one of its most popular players is completely ridiculous. It has nothing to do with Newton's personality, and everything to do with his playing style. He is very hard to ref, because on a lot of possession he can be considered both a QB and a runner, at any given time. When he is not in the throwing motion, he will not get these calls in the vast majority of the time.

Are you fuggin kidding me with this BS?

It doesn't matter if he escaped the pocket, LAUNCHING AND LEADING WITH THE CROWN OF YOUR HELMET is still prohibited (to ANY player). You come in here with a dumbass 1st post like that. And this folks is your typical NFL fan that regurgitates what they hear and post it everywhere without any real knowledge about it. Nice work.

And the fact you are comparing holding to illegal spearing shows just how ignorant you are.

Until Ron, or Maybe even JR says something nothing will change. Hey but blacks in this country are used to that type of treatment. Which is exactly why that tap dance Cam did on the Kaepernick issue was a major fail.

Agreed. I think he purposely tries to not go there though. I think if he really said how he felt, he'd piss a lot of people off - not that that's a problem. I wouldn't be surprised if his sentiments slowly, but quietly, changed over the course of the season. It's also going to take, like you said, Rivera and that front office speaking out in defense of Cam. He gets so unfairly treated by the media, so the backing of his coach (who is also a minority) will be great. If he goes to the podium and he says he's not being protected and the league is allowing these hits, he's called a cry baby. If he says oh well it's football, he's giving it a pass. I definitely think RR needs to speak up and I want Cam to start back saying exactly what he feels. Did you see how uncomfortable he looked last night being neutral about those calls?

I felt that way after the SB and stuck by it. Haven't bought apparel. Post here a bit lesslast night was different. It isn't the team I'm angry at-i have an enormous amount of pride in them right now-it's the sickening league that makes me think that maybe this sport just isn't as good as I thought it was.

I just want somebody, anybody with this organization, to stand up and defiantly call this crap out. The two lady Riveras ranting a bit on twitter last night (while Ron did his usual Ron thing)  is probably the most we got.

and take eyesore of a shield off of our field until the league can demonstrate an actual concern for protecting the players on our team.

What if all our Captains turn their back facing the shield and take a knee during the coin toss?
