Why not trade Klein to Giants?

Getts has set up his team the way it wants it, why go and trade away a valuable piece in a Super Bowl caliber team?  We have his replacement filing in right behind him once Klein "graduates."

That is what good drafting SHOULD do for you, or at least as a best case. Having a deep roster does alllow for that "Next man up" to actually have some talent. Sure we may  still have a couple of position groups in need  of more/better depth, but man are we getting closenough.

That is  one aspect you have to  give  to the Gman. We really do have a deep roster.

Got it, just wanted to add that. Some folks may not realize all FAs gained and lost matter for the final picks given out. It's not just based on each individual player lost.

I am under the impression that the comp pick equation is a well guarded secret. No one really knows what their comp picks will be. Sure you have a general idea,  but you are guessing at best.

Hellz, no one is sure from  year to year exactly how many picks there will wind up being.

It is not published, but after researching all the previous years it has become pretty clear what the criteria is although there are some special situations that can occur that the league will consider and make it so you can't predict everything.

There are 32 comp picks every year. When free agency was introduced they eliminated a round of the draft and added a rounds worth of comp picks.

Klein provides us the same security at a key position that DA affords us. Trading this depth for a marginal pick/player this year rather than using this depth to our advantage would be a mistake. Should it become necessary he'll play and then we reap a future compensatory next year is the logical path of action.

They actually gave out 33 last year, but you are correct, there are sites where people have gotten a decent handle on the rounds/picks.

This page is a pretty good explanation of how compensatory picks work and overthecap does a pretty good job of predicting it. I went back on their 2016 predictions and the 33 given out and it was pretty much spot on even with a list of things that "could" happen.

I wonder if the 33 picks was because NE lost their 1st? Why hurt a guy from getting a chance to be drafted because they cheat? Let him get that chance somewhere. In the end, NE lost their pick but same total number of players drafted (given a chance at a job).

I would not want to see Fozzy Whittaker, Ed Dickson, Philly Brown, Brenton Bersin, Damiere Byrd, Gino Gradkowski, Tyler Larsen, Darryl Williams, and Donald Hawkins starting on offense. I would not want to see them with a large amount of snaps. Keep them away from Cam Newton.

I would not want to see Addison and Delaire starting at DE. Soliai and Butler would not give fans confidence in stopping the run up the middle. Teddy Bridgewater, Robert McClain, Darryl Worley, Colin Jones, and Dean Marlowe starting in the secondary would be a nightmare. Mayo, Klein, and Cash are suitable starters for an 7-9 caliber team,

Outside of the LB depth, this team has players you never want to see the field. Most of these players will likely never start for the Panthers if the starter gets injured. The front office will be out on the street looking for another Cortland Finnegan or making a trade for a vet starter from another team on their last leg like Jared Allen.

The Panthers are hardly stacked, and their depth ranks below most teams in the NFL. Luckily we have some of the top talent as starters in the NFL that get the snaps and stay healthy.

As for Klein, he would be an average starter on any team, and that team would quickly look to draft his replacement. Klein is not and never will be a franchise starting LB. He is likely a career back up. So, no team will trade for him outside of a 6th or 7th round pick.

Yeah, I've got to disagree with this on so many levels. Depth isn't about having a bunch of guys that could be starters on another team. Having a player or two like that on the bench is a luxury.

Depth is having some role players, some solid but unspectacular guys and some folks that will strap on a helmet and do what the coach asks them. Here, we have the advantage of having our second and even third strings populated almost fully with guys like that. And we don't have to rely on those guys for our first string to fill in holes.

A lot of teams would kill to have our depth.

I think I am the only Panther fan alive that wants to give Klein a contract. TD has said multiple times he is retiring after the 2017 season. It's a one year cost of having an expensive backup LB who can play all positions vs. putting all our hopes and dreams that Mayo can be as good as he was in a few preseason games this year, every year.

That's the end of his contract, but according to the link below from a month ago, he isn't thinking about retiring after 2017. I wouldn't mind having Klein back as well, but I think the thought is that as a FA, he's going to get an offer we won't want to match.

I hadn't actually read that regarding Davis, thanks. I'd love to have him back after 2017, no matter how slim the chance.
