Why not trade Klein to Giants?

Considering the Panthers window is wide open to win the Super Bowl this year, who/what from the Giants would increase that chance this year or in the future? Does that outweigh what Klein gives us?

Looking through their roster, the only player we could realistically get from them for Klein that might be an upgrade would be Leon Hall. Otherwise nothing at all.

It isn't just about the one player, they can also cancel out incoming free agents. If we hadn't lost Nortman, Gradkowski's signing would have cancelled out Norman's compensatory pick. I hope this doesn't happen, but let's say Short were to be signed as a free agent and assigned a 3rd round grade, losing Klein could allow us to sign another free agent and not lose compensation for Short. It's a special sauce kind of thing, but this link is a good overview of all of that. Note how the Giants lost out on getting 2 5ths in compensation for two guys they signed at a 7th round level (ignore that they also signed 3 more guys way higher). Just an example of how you have to be careful. That's one of the reasons why Norman got let go this off season because we weren't signing anyone else, so no cancellation. Next year, we may only lose Klein and Charles Johnson, so we may do some free agent shopping next year.

I'm aware of all that. Was just explaining the dollar amounts needed to get certain picks.

At this point our team doesn't really need anything that is a 5th rounder or below. We are actually pretty stacked so it would be very difficult for a 5th rounder to actually make the team. We saw Sandland and Sanchez both fail to make the team this year because we simply have better talent than we ever had before. In past years when we were lacking talent, every drafted player made the team.

Me neither and that is only maybe a short term solution. I am not a fan of turning a strength to a possible liability.

When Luke went down last year we only played Klein on 1st and 2nd down. 3rd down we brought in Shaq for better pass coverage. With Mayo looking really good I don't think the drop off would be that great and let's be honest, we aren't winning a Super Bowl without Luke so at the most Klein or Mayo would just be a temporary fill in. Hall could turn a liability into an average unit if he's still got something in the tank.

I'm not saying do the trade and I would rather have a draft pick if we did do a trade with him, but losing Klein really isn't that huge of a loss if it came down to it. With TD, Shaq and Luke healthy, Klein is only going to see the field on ST and possibly goal line/short yardage situations.

You lost me a little bit. Early to be drinking that much?

That said, I would rather keep Klein this year and let him sign for compensation of some sort. Mayo is still on a rookie deal, so 2 more cheap years after this year. After his contract is up, we either have his replacement for a backup or extend him. Klein has his NFL game tape from the 3 games he started and played well. Mayo doesn't have that and hopefully, doesn't before his rookie contract is up (hoping for full health of our starters). Mayo right now is more affordable than Klein will be.

lol....ABC 1,2,3 go panthers
