Why not trade Klein to Giants?

top dawg

Recommended Posts

It is now pretty much expected for A.J. Klein to hit the road the road and move on for a starting opportunity after this season. Klein has starter's potential in the NFL.

After reading an an extremely short srticle on the league's web site (which is more like a reflection really), and  knowing the ties that Dave Gettleman has with the Giants, it would seem to me that this would be the perfect situation for a trade.

Instead of getting nothing after the season, an opportunity to pick up a pick is right there if G-man would just explore it.

This will be another Comp Pick scenario.  He will sign somewhere after this season for a large (not huge) contract and start/play the full season. We will then get a 4th round comp pick the following year.

Mayo will be the new backup and rinse and repeat.

He is too valuable as a backup to the team this year to go after a mid round pick now.

edit: because English is hard!

Seems like everyone is quick to want to get rid of him. If anything happens to any of our linebackers, he can step into that role and while he might not be as effective as Luke, TD, or Shaq, he knows the system and can make a potentially horrible situation not look as bad, just like last season. We already have an unproven secondary, let's keep the depth at linebacker in tact.

It's simple...we have a human missle playing MLB that missed parts of 4 games last year due to a concussion, which can easily reappear at any time with the way Luke plays. In that situation with what's on the line, the drop off from Luke to Klein, while substantial, isn't near what it would be from Luke to mayo.

Klein has shown he can run our defense. That's like dumping your insurance policy before driving on the auto baun.

To get a 4th round comp pick, Klein would have to sign for more than $6.5M/year. Danny Trevathan didn't even get that this year and he is far more accomplished with a higher ceiling than Klein. Honestly, we are probably looking at a 6th round comp pick which is in the $3-4M/year range. Could maybe get a 5th but that's $5-6.5M/year, but also it could be a 7th which is less than $3M/year. A backup LB who hasn't really ever done much more than fill-in duties is not going to fetch a premium on the open market.

I get the comp pick and all, but who is to say that a few spots in upward draft position wouldn't make all the difference in the world as far as acquiring who we want? Plus, comps are not guaranteed. Furthermore, there may be some other pieces we could involve in a trade.

Lastly, knowing and seeing our depth in action at the position leads me to believe that we can get along just fine this year without Klein. The benefits of a trade may be well worth it.

What could the Panthers realistically get for Klein at this point?  Maybe a 5th or 6th rounder?  That's basically the compensatory pick they'd get anyway.  And getting a player in return would just be a backup for backup swap.  After the job Klein did last season filling in for Luke, I'd rather have him on the roster.  I get the whole not letting players walk for nothing angle.  So I wouldn't be mad at a trade.  I just don't think it's necessary.

I didn't know the dollar cutoffs for comp picks, so thanks for posting that.

Barring injury, I feel a team will shell out a good chunk of change for Klein.  He has shown, when filling in for injury's, that he is more then capable. I could see 5-6M per year.

Eagles are a more realistic scenario.  They need a LB, their DE's are better than ours and they're having a complete fire sale of Chip Kelly players.  Marcus Smith was on their bubble, barely made the team, was a 2014 first rounder, and supposedly improved this summer.

we definitely have an over abundance of talent at LB,right now, which in turn is raising some eye brows

Mayo stock is at an all time high premium,i'd say this trade would be the most rewarding for both parties involved

Klein is a versatile LB who is the picture perfect backup for this All-Star lineup corps of LB in Carolina.the thing about Klein is that you would  have to find a trade partner in need of a MLB...which is of course his true forte.

ioersonally like Klein a little more than Mayo, only because his versatility compliments our need.however, on the other hand, how much is this want going to cost me,?..which is not the same as paying for need.

so interseting topic, that I'm stuck on the fence about whom, not should we?you know,it's kinda like putting a pig in suspense once he's placed in a fence....jokes,settle down

.   ....btw,yo,thank you
