Drew Brees wants to retire a Saint. But he wants 4 years/100 million dollars from the Saints.

So last year's Aints draft class has

  • a 1st round #13 overall OT that can't displace RT Zach Strief and is being bounced around the line looking for a position to play, who needs to be pushed by the released and re-signed withered husk of Jahri Evans
  • a 1st round MLB whose average lateral agility and sideline to sideline range allowed slot receivers and TEs to flourish, displaced to SLB by the nearly 30 year James Laurinaitis, who was dumped by the Rams because he's not special enough anymore to be worth the $5.25 million in cap space the Rams saved from his release
  • a 2nd OLB that tore the same ACL twice in college has now torn it for the 3rd time
  • a 3rd round QB who was just waived
  • a 5th round OLB that was on IR all of last year and waived this year
  • a 5th round CB that played in 7 games and had to be placed on IR because he received more concussions (3) than actual game starts (2)

And now when they can see the light at the end of salary cap hell, the oncoming train of Brees' new contract with more than $25 million per year will crash into their $29 million of cap space next year

This is what happens when the Aints GM is also the Pelicans GM. Being there half the time leads to a half ass job

I use to think you actually knew what you were talking about when it came to the Saints.

Peat: starting

Anthony: starting

Williams: starting

Davison: starting

Murphy: starting KR

Swann was our nickel most of last year. Not sure how you predict concussion injuries in the future. Your comment was funny, seeing as the Panthers 5th round corner from this year has been cut (1) more than he's appeared in a regular season game (0).

Kikaha is on PUP. I believe the Panthers know all about a top draft pick tearing an ACL though, correct?

Peats movement is more about finding a spot where he beneifits the team more than what benefits him. Streif is a better RT than anything we have at guard, which is why Peat is at guard.

Anyway, 4 offensive/defensive starters out of one draft isn't too shabby.

Swann was your nickel less than half the year, not most. And last time I looked, he's on the IR for the 2nd year in a row.

Kikaha can try to come back from a 3rd torn ACL in the same knee. Others have, too. Only one has ever done it, tho...

And Peat being the #13 overall pick and trying to find a spot is hilarious. His spot should have been cemented when he held up that jersey with Goodell. Plenty of Swiss Army knife-type linemen later in the draft and in free agency

Williams was on IR all of last year, so this season is his first real test under fire, just like our CBs. Williams is just as unproven a starter, too.

Davison is starting? Good for him. Must feel good for a 5th round D-linemen to beat out either John Jenkins (your 2013 3rd rounder) or the prize of your 2016 defensive free agency, Nick Fairley

Looks like a pretty good deal for the Saints and Brees pending what the proration looks like. They'll be stuck with a really huge dead money hit in 2018 if he retires but that was likely always going to be a tank and get a new QB year. If he keeps playing they can restructure the voidable years.

I don't believe we'll be stuck with a lot of dead money in 2018. It'll depend on how it's structured. If it pays him the majority of the guaranteed money in the first two years, which early reports indicate, once it voids we could be looking at having around $8 million in dead money once the contract voids.

Reports are it clears $12.5M in cap space in 2016 meaning he is getting about $4M in base this year and a $16M signing bonus to break up the $20M in salary he was getting(+ the $10M in previous proration) for a $17.5M cap figure in 2016 and if it follows most other recent Saints contracts then there is going to be a fairly sizable roster bonus that gets converted to signing bonus in 2017.

    • You and I both know there isn't a coach we could or can still hire that can "fix" Bryce Young. Even at mighty Alabama with one of the best modern coaches in college football history Mac Jones was still a better QB than Bryce Young. Mac Jones.... We already know how you feel about Canales on a personal level so in that regard you wanting him fired is not news. You don't have to disguise it behind this shroud of rabble about not fixing Bryce Young. To his credit he somehow had us competive against the Chiefs and the Eagles on the road with #9. But no coaching staff can overcome their starting QB turning the ball over 4 times. We definitely have developed some of our younger offensive pieces. And as far as Evero goes he has earned criticism and if he's fired so be it but in his defense many of us said in the offseason this defensive roster was a disaster waiting to happen given the resources we spent on the offense while neglecting the defense. That was Dan Morgan's plan. He swung too hard toward offense to salvage the Bryce Young trade. That's on him. We can scream about XL all we want but at least he's actually been on the field for the most part. The Brooks pick was a luxury pick at the time and now it is a Hurney level blunder. Dan Morgan has gotten a lot of early praise here when in reality he's unequivocally deserving of significant criticism. But if you say that some people get up in arms because he's a former Panther. Big whoop. He has just as much to prove this upcoming season as Canales. That's why to me in my own personal opinion I say one more season and then if it's more of the same say goodbye to both.
    • It's a decent vid with compelling reasons for his opinion. But, my thing is is that you simply can't draft McMillan thinking he is a surefire WR1. There are questions. His 40---rightly or wrongly---will play a part. I'd think that his splits (which will speak more to his game translating to the pros in my mind) are more important.  As much as you're trying to sell us that McMillan is a don't-overthink-it-type-of-player, I wouldn't say that's the case. Workouts will play a part in all of this.  At this point, I like the thought of Tetairoa. That's as much as I can give you right now.
