Drew Brees wants to retire a Saint. But he wants 4 years/100 million dollars from the Saints.

1. His franchise number next year would be $42M, so no leverage from the team.

2. Anybody remember what the Saint was before him?

3. $25M a year at the qb position does not put you in cap hell as long as you resist the urgue to push cap towards the last years.

He'll get payed, guaranteeing the Saints staying in the 6-10 win range never risking playoff or a high enough pick to get a replacement qb.

Win win lose (us Brees Saints) :D

Don't get me wrong, I hope they pay him the deal and it puts them in Cap hell for a few more years.

But how can anyone possibly say the guy is not still elite/a top 5 qb.  He threw for a lot of yards and points, and didn't throw many interceptions.  The Saints problems are almost all on the defensive side.

Yeah agree, he's still a very good quarterback tho he's not young anymore. And I mean he's really good.

He's worth it and the best thing going for them. It would also give the team and him a set deadline that would allow them to begin preparing a successor.

Excellent point!  There have been several along this thread.  Sure, we'd love to see the Saints embroiled in salary cap hell more, why not?

But from the Saints perspective, what are their options?

-Let Brees walk for nothing?  While he's on the tail end of his career, he's still in the upper echelon of NFL qbs at times.  They don't have a true successor.

-Do the franchise for $42 million for one year?  Then they are at the same place again.  What is his cap figure this year?  $30 million?  $25 is a better number for them.

The fact is, the Saints have not developed a plan B for Brees.  They are going to ride him into whatever end that happens to him.  Their best chance to win anything is with Brees because he's a master of Payton's offense.  Because of a lack of foresight on the team (they should have found his replacement the past two years, but haven't) in a "Win now at all costs" mentality, they find themselves in a bind.

Now that doesn't hurt my heart at all >;)

Had Brees been available, he'd be in Vikings purple right now. Or Broncos Orange. Or NY Jets Green.Or LA Rams blue and gold,

The Saints could let him go next year and save a boatload of bucks, but why? Their team would lose the one thing that gives them a shot at winning and some other team just missing a QB from their picture would snag him in a heartbeat.

And Brees knows this. He finished his negotiations right there. End of story.

Fwiw, its not that easy to do.  The Packers got somewhat lucky getting AR when Brett retired, and the Colts had to suck for a year to get Manning's replacement.  Other than that, I can't think of any teams that have really had a plan in place when their star qb retired or left.

Very few in today's NFL....saw it more in the past, but that was when "normal" guys could play QB.

Montana to Young is an older example.

Very true =)  Cam spoils me.

Weren't there reports before Cam signed his deal that he was looking for $25 million a year? That's all these are, are reports.

However, it wouldn't surprise me. Drew is a big part of the NFLPA. It doesn't only affect Drew if he takes less than market value, it affects everyone. If he does sign a $25 million per year extension, it would still be a smaller percentage of the cap than the deal he signed in 2012.

Cap is rising. So are contracts. I think we need to get use to seeing ridiculous numbers for QBs.

Yeah, I agree. In his latter years, Brees seems to have transitioned more toward his role in the NFLPA than trying to make sure he can try to compete for another Super Bowl. I almost wonder if he's trying to position himself to make a run at NFLPA President in his retirement.

If he truly wants 4 years, $100M the Saints need to just rip the bandaid off.  Brees is still a good QB, but he's no longer elite.  You can't pay a guy at that age who is in decline that much money unless you're in a situation like the Broncos were with Peyton Manning - you have an elite team, you just need a smart, veteran QB to steer the ship.  That isn't the Saints.  If Brees isn't willing to do a team friendly deal, they need to just cut bait and get started with the rebuild.

With that said, I hope they give him $100M.
