Here's your current 53

We still had more picks going into the 2004 season after we almost won the Super Bowl. A Super Bowl appearance shouldn't mean you can throw away picks. I still like DG, but I'm not a fan of that strategy. We're still weak at OL depth, TE depth, DE depth, and S depth.

He didn't "throw away" picks. The roster is so deep and talented that our 5th round and second from last picks weren't good enough to make the roster and will try to be stashed on the practice squad. That is a damn good thing.

We're not so deep to not lack depth at certain positions. I just named 4 of them.

And a 5th round pick and UDFA would be the difference between having depth at those position and not having depth there?

First, I think you are wrong about the OL depth. Based on the way they've played the 2-4 preseason games (and 1 for Gino), Gradkowski, Larsen, Williams and Hawkins are pretty solid. Don't be surprised to see Hawkins as a starter down the road.

Second, two picks didn't make the 53. A 5th and a 7th, on a 17-2 team, not surprising. Hopefully, they get to the PS. Who else could we have taken there that would have made the roster?

Third, no team is deep at every position. I'd like to have better young DEs, but it's basically the same as last year except instead of Allen we have a healthy Johnson. Safety isn't super deep but we do have corners that have played safety before as well in a pinch and Our safeties can play both spots. Would I rather have some better backup DEs and Ss, sure but we had 2 lost draft spots and one was at your depth position that I definitely agree with (TE).

A lot of people are severely overrating our players. Our OL played horribly after the starters went out until the final game . Even then Webb was still being pressured constantly every time we got in the REDzone. I noticed Hawkins was removed from LT and placed at RT during the game. Our backup safeties left receivers wide open. Our backup DEs weren't getting pressure.  All of our TEs after Olsen can't block or catch consistently.

Yeah I know not every team is going to be deep at every postion, but posters are also assuming DG is the supreme brain know-all when it comes to the draft. Yes he is very good at finding talent and he is a very good GM. But it doesn't mean whatever strategy he uses during the draft is the guidebook that every team in the league should follow. No GM in the league is or every has been at that God-like status.

Again I love DG and think he is one of the best GMs in the league and I still think we can make a deep playoff push. I just don't see only going into a season with 3 draft picks is a good idea. I can't recall any other team that has ever done that or ,if there was, if that team made a deep playoff push that year. Did the 2008 Pats do that after going undefeated, but losing the SB?

Blechen played WAY better than him.

I saw way too many whiffs on tackles and got steamrolled quite a few times by RBs out of the backfield. In my opinion, no he didn't play better. If anything, I was unimpressed with his play overall.

Norris played very, very well. Pay attention

Norris had a great game Thursday. Sure, it was against 3rd/4th stringers, but he's not in danger of starting anytime soon either. He had quite a few plays where he made TFLs and got good penetration when closing through the gaps. He also made some nice open field tackles, and just genuinely played his way onto the team.

Actually, they provided a pretty good pocket for most of the game. You're right that they did get blown up in the red zone though, but that wasn't Hawkins, that was Williams (#60) that got shifted to RT because he was getting beat like a drum by their speedier rushers. At one point, I remember him trying some sort of spin move, that put his back to the DE. He promptly got pushed out of the way, en route to yet another sack of Webb. He did a little better at RT, but not much more so. I'm hoping the kid can improve, but there's a definite reason we kept Remmers as the starting RT.

Williams was a DG pick too. Another reason why its ok to not treat DG as a draft God.  I hope Williams can pan out and take Remmes spot, but Rivera saying he isn't even challenging Remmers is a bad sign.

BTW it was Hawkins that got shifted to RT. I remember mentioning that in the gameday thread.

    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
    • The lack of production is especially surprising given how much effort the team put into coaxing the best from him.  In just six short years he’s had the opportunity to work with 3 different GMs, 7 different head coaches and 10 different starting quarterbacks.  There’s literally no excuse to be made that one of those combos didn’t work.  It might be time to look withIAN.
    • I would say maybe 8 in a tier by themselves and all but 2 where picked in the top of the first allen pat m stroud burrow jackson hurts (maybe) Herbert Stafford
