Can't cut one of the 4 backup OL for a high risk. A 4th rounder that got cut already seems way more risky than you think. Maybe a guy like Norris/Teddy, but Beavers seems more like a guy you try to get on the PS. I remember thinking he could be a nice late round pick, but if he showed that versatility and the best footwork of any tackle, you'd think the Vikings wouldn't have cut him since they used a 4th. Lots of guys in the draft have that potential, but don't come through once in the NFL.

you churn the bottom of your roster with projects whose potential is far greater than a below average backup.

,Spielman is a loose cannon right now and this might just be the opportunistic time to take advantage of his erratic behavior.

Lol @ alllll the Nostradamus in this thread AFTER the fact he was cut......... Only one I remember was RR, he said Sanchez looked 12 and he does. Jimmy seems good peeps, so he's about the only ones calling this besides the hundred or so claiming they forecast this.

We drafted 2 guys in outside roles and 1 slot corner with ballhawking skills.  But....don't forget we have Bene back and the team seems to like McClain.

4 - Bene, Bradberry, Worley, McClain

If we're just keeping 5, the rest were all battling for a spot.  Correct me if I'm wrong, didn't we go into last season with a super thin 4 count at CB bc of Jones' versatility?

When you can literally sign a corner off the street during the middle of the season and still go to the SB, 4 corner is enough to start with.

I've seen the "this is why you don't draft for need" argument a bit, but I don't think that's what happened here. Sure, going into the draft we probably needed three corners. What we didn't need was three ROOKIE corners. Considering that Teddy Williams is almost exclusively a special teamer, there was really only room for four true corners. Were we really gonna fill those spots with three rookies plus Bene coming off a broken leg?

We know Gettleman preaches BPA, we also know it's not as cut-and-dried as he describes it. Bradberry was a BPA pick (well, their second rated behind a DT, close enough); and he obviously wanted Worley, hence the trade up. I think Sanchez was just the highest rated at the time when they finally got to pick again. He was more of a nickel so they had all the bases covered should Bene's injury linger.

Should Bradberry and/or Worley struggle and need more time to develop, put Bene outside and put Zack at nickel.

Should the outside guys adapt well but Sanchez struggles, put Bene at nickel.

If Bene just isn't ready to play at least you've got some talented players at all three positions, even if they're rooks.

We can argue about Worley's struggles, but the fact is the team thought the second option. And it's worth noting that last year with injuries and even signing a guy off his couch, we never kept more than one nickel. This is especially relevant now that we're minimizing the position a bit with Shaq playing more "Buffalo" vs. guys like Fitzgerald and Graham.

The solution to all this would've been Brandon Boykin. If, you know, he didn't have some lingering injury and the potential to mess up our compensatory pick situation.

I still wonder if we'll see Bene across from Bradberry when in our base defense, then slide him inside in nickel situations. I think he's too talented to limit to just nickel.
