Actually, the way I saw it, Ball was trying to avoid contacting the ball.  It had ricocheted of the Steelers player's foot and was travelling fast.  Ball was coming up on the ball fast and it surprised him.  He didn't have time to react to cover the ball so the only option was to hurdle the ball instead of contacting it and knocking it away from his teammates.  I thought it was a pretty heads-up play on Ball's part.

If you have time to jump over a ball headed for your chest, you have time to catch it.

If you can dodge a wrench...

I still feel like Sandland has done better, especially as a blocker, than most of you give him credit for... As far as a receiver, he probably ran enough routes for me to count on one hand, even though I bet his snap count for the entire preseason was probably in the 50's or more.

It isn't that he can't catch. It is that we really didn't give him the opportunity to do so.

What Beau did do more of than any other TE is play the H-Back role. I thought he did a fine job there.

That said, I agree that Marcus Lucas has looked really good.

Another argument I will continue to comment on is the keeping of Byrd.

Yes he has shown flashes. Yes he blocked very well last night. But I just don't really see us keeping 6 WRs. I especially don't see us activating 6 WRs on game day. If you only activate 4-5 guys, is Bersin then the odd man out? I don't really doubt Bersin makes the team. He is a reliable receiver and decent on ST.

I could be wrong though, and we could keep 6 and deactivate Bersin AND Byrd in favor of Benji, Funch, Ginn, and Brown. But then, why are you keeping a guy, mainly for his return skills, and not activating him?

Who knows? What a good and bad position to be in, though, to have to make these calls.

I just didn't see the same with Beau, and I really wanted to because I don't see value in Simonson.

He just didn't get any push on his blocks, resulting in Simonsons underwhelming performances looking better than they were.

Lucas blocked better than Beau and showcased the ability to get open and catch the rock.

I'd like Beau and Wallace to be on the PS and learn, because I think technique is the issue with these guys, because the physical attributes are certainly there.

I can't remember specific plays right now, but there were several where Sandland, both from the line and the H-Back spot, pushed his guy upfield well.

IIRC one of the plays highlighting Hawkins shows this. Sandland was right beside Hawkins on the play and they both got great push and opened a lane.

I have said the whole preseason that the team would stash an extra TE as a H-back, Just not sure which one it will be. I would also not be surprise if Dickson gets cut for youth.

Dickson has only played in one preseason game IIRC. Either his job as the #2 is 100% safe, or we really are concerned about his injuries/want to see what Simonson/Sandland/Lucas could do in different areas.

He's also (IIRC) the 10th highest paid Panther. I really think that he is on the bubble of getting pushed out because of this combined with the above, even though we're in good cap shape.

Also of note, the H-Back position essentially accounts for extra and end rushers, as well as being an option in the short passing game. We lost a Super Bowl essentially from losing the battle to extra and end rushers.

I wish I could find snap counts somewhere, but I think Sandland had at least double or triple the plays at H-Back than anyone this preseason.

Mayo looks like a damn fine LB.

This is really encouraging.  Since it seems extremely likely we'll be letting AJ Klein leave as a free agent - hopefully getting a good comp pick for him - it's really nice to know we've got a competent backup behind him.

DG may love his hog mollies, but dang he knows LB talent.  Klein, Shaq, Mayo, Cash....!

I can post snap counts for you if you'd like.  I have access to the full game books with preseason snap counts.   Give me 30 or 40 minutes and I'll post them.

Nice! That would totally interest me. Wondering how accurate my estimations are.
