If Gaffney becomes available...

Well, I am sure people said the same thing about Tolbert. He's a fan favorite, great big teddy bear with surprisingly nimble feet, but he's not gonna last forever. He is one of a kind, but Gaffney is roughly 6'1" and 230 lbs. He can catch, and he runs the ball with power. He wasn't a bad blocker in school either. These are the same reasons why Gettleman drafted him in the first place. I am not going to be so dismissive.

You have every right to not be dismissive.  He's just not the same type of back as Tolbert, which is why I stated he wouldn't be his heir apparent.  From what I've seen, doesn't offer anything more than our current backs.

Why in the hell would we want him?

Bigger back. 4.49 speed. Soft hands. Runs with power. Blocks.

The only reason not to want him is injury history.

What is the type of back that Tolbert is? Tell me what Gaffney can't do that Tolbert does.

Have phenomenal dance moves.  Which is obviously the most important thing.

Strengths

Excellent size. Effective inside runner. Nice vision and patience. Runs behind his pads -- churns his legs through contact and fights for extra yards. Good hands as a receiver out of the backfield. Highly competitive. Tough and durable. Well-conditioned athlete -- showed he could handle a heavy workload after a year away from the gridiron (averaged 24 carries per game). Very solid in pass protection. Recorded a 6.78-second three-cone time at the NFL Scouting Combine, finishing second among backs.

Weaknesses

Tight-hipped and straight-linish. Limited twitch and wiggle. Gears down to cut. Average quickness to and through the hole. Runs duck-footed and lacks breakaway speed -- can be tracked down from behind. Has split his time and training between two sports.

Draft Projection

Rounds 5-6

Bottom Line

Gaffney, who doubles as a baseball player, rejoined the Cardinal football team after a one-year stint in Class A. Did not skip a beat, shouldering the load as a feature back and putting himself back on the NFL radar by showing inside running skills as a big, athletic, downhill back willing to grind out the tough yards. Has the determination and competitiveness to earn a backup role for a power-running team.

Sounds kinda like Tolbert to me. Not wholly on point, but kinda like him.

I looked back on what Gettleman had to say when we drafted him.

Basically Gettleman said that he could not only run, but block. Gaffney impressed Getty with his blitz pickup.  He said that Gaffney understood how to pick up the blitz. That is something, like Gettleman alluded to, that usually has to be taught. And it's surely a difference between the average back---arguably what we have now behind Stew---and Gaffney, at least in Gettleman's estimation. So there is your difference, @Nick_81.

Gettlemen did say Gaffney was smart, tough and durable. I'd imagine that durability is an issue in light of the present.

so he wasnt good enough to make the panthers 53 and was trying to be put on the practice squad but got snatched by the patriots only to be cut from them.  Explain to me why Carolina would sign him immediately?

How does one get pie for making up a new history like this?

Why are people obsessed with Gaffney? He did nothing for us and hasn't really done anything with his career. Move on

Obsessed? That's a bit much. It's just discussing possibilities that in all likelihood probably won't happen on a football message board about a past Panther whose unfortunate departure was unique.

As for him not doing anything. Of course he hasn't done anything, the start of his career was derailed by knee injuries. I wish the kid luck, because if nothing else, he has lived the Panthers' moniker to a tee, and that is "Keep Pounding!" He's a high character guy to boot.

Again, it's not obsession, just discussion.

Small quibble. 4.49 speed at the combine, i.e. 4.5 speed. Still fast for that size, no doubt, but 4.40 is another level, i.e. when a RB runs a 4.6, the "slow" comments start coming out. ADP ran 4.41, so saying 4.4 is misleading.

OK, I'll clarify it just for you by adding the "9."

I don't want it lost upon anyone though that one if the main things that set him apart, according to G-man, is his ability to block.

Huh? Wasn't good enough to make the roster? And he intentionally got hurt? What?

We only picked up Fozzy because Gaffney got hurt. But for injury Gaffney would likely be a Panther today.

Sounds more like CAP to me...

If he were to be brought in, it wouldn't be for Tolbert's role.

I thought Bill ran him heavy against us last week as a snide FU to the Panthers, kinda like some kid playing with a new toy in front of another kid who also wanted it but didn't get it. fug Bill Belicheat.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

In his 3 preseason games he's attempted 9, 11, 9......in order. So not really.
